Chinese tube replacement
« on: 12 Oct 2008, 06:06 am »
Hello, looking to replace the 6CA7/EL34 tubes that came with my new Jolida 1000RC.  The unit doesnt sound bad, however, I would like to replace the original Chinese tubes with something of better quality and sound?  Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated.  Also, a good place where I could purchase would be a welcomed addition to my quest....

Thanks in advance~!  Robert

Parts Connexion/Underwood Hi-Fi offers a mod to the 1000RC which includes swapping out the stock 12AX7 and 12AT7 tubes with Electro-Harmonix tubes.  Interesting that they don't replace the main power tubes, so maybe those Chinese tubes are pretty good...?

Go with a Russian tube that's not overly expensive. Stay away from the Asian ones. JJ/Tesla makes excellent power tubes for the money.

Hi Robert,

Get in touch with Jim McShane.  jimmcshane@prodigy.net  Super nice guy and very knowledgeable. He has helped me with mods to my Jolida 302b. Ask him about the New Sensor reissue KT77's, not cheap but potentially the best new production replacement for EL34.

I would like to second the recommendation for Jim McShane.  I recently purchased some reissue Gold Lion KT88's from Jim and he was most helpful and shipped quickly. I can also recommend Andy at Vintage Tube Services.  Andy really knows tubes and can give great advise working within your budget.

I have been using a matched quad of Electro-Harmonix EL34EH in my Dynaco 70.  They require a long break in period but for $52 (for the matched quad at boiaudioworks) the price can't be beat.  I have been satisfied with the tube quality and sound thus far.
The tube store has a review on a few EL34's here:

http://www.thetubestore.com also has a pretty good selection, though I've used Tube Depot before too with good results. I've heard Svetlana SED EL34s before and was impressed, but I haven't done a lot of comparisons with other kinds.

Thanks guys, well.  I am undergoing some serious re-purchasing of my stereo gear.  So little by little I am getting all of my stuff back, maybe its not the same as before but the wait is finally coming to an end.  Thanks for all the advise.  I've been considering going with Cryo tubes from http://www.cryoset.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=13&products_id=38&osCsid=4801cb6d8b5651ad47bcbc05a7833363 dont know however since I am still doing some research and price shopping.  I need a total of 8 tubes which be costly somewhere in the range of $200 plus...  :nono:

Some people swear by the Cryo'ed stuff, I'm not convinced yet, personally.
