BPT OB at RMAF
« on: 7 Oct 2008, 10:26 pm »
I just wanted to give a heads-up to any AC members interested in OB designs, attending RMAF to visit the BPT room (9016). One of the speakers we will be using is an OB 20Hz-20KHz 2-way. This project is not a commercial one but built just for fun out of curiosity. I call it the NB² (no box & no baffle). This custom dipole designed by me was an experiment to test the sonic virtues of what is basically a full range 2-way,  open box design with no baffle used for the ribbon panel (6’ ribbon driver is mounted directly to the solid aluminum support structure) and the smallest baffle possible for the dynamic woofer drivers that still allows the structural integrity needed for the huge amount of energy generated by two long throw dynamic 15” woofers (per side) operating in free air. Wiring is our custom BPT copper Litz wire for superb transient response and high current capability. Crossovers, frequency response correction and time alignment of the displaced woofer section is done digitally by a TacT Audio processor. There are numerous possible advantages to this design: no panel reflections, the superb speed and transparency of a ribbon driver from 150Hz to 20KHz, the dynamic capability and 20Hz bass performance of cone drivers, separate “enclosures” so the vibrational energy created by the woofers does not directly effect the ribbon, the ability to place the woofers close to the wall for bass reinforcement while the ribbons remain farther away from the wall to minimize reflections, along with the polar radiation advantages of a dipole. This may be quite an ear opener for many boxed audiophiles. A fun project that produces great sound.

A visual representation would help tremendously. ( Pictures please ).

Here is a picture of the ribbons alone right after assembly and one along with the woofers in a test system. Base is 1.25" aluminum and support rods on woofers are 2".

Hi Chris,

A quick suggestion -

Buy some lengths of foam pipe thermal insulation and clip it lengthways over the vertical edges to provide a figure-of-eight 'waveguide' baffle shape.

This will improve efficiency at the lower roll-off limit, plus has the potential to reduce edge diffraction !

Different diameters are available.

Cheers .......... Graham.

Hi Chris

Great idea!  Can you tell us more about the ribbons? DIY, commercially available etc?

Regards

Jose

second the need for /advantages of even simple diffraction measure.... could even use quarter sections of PVC.  Are those the BG rd75?

Mr_Bill:
Back from RMAF and had a fun show. As to the sound of my speakers I will have to say Friday they were good, but after everything was on line and tweaked by Saturday they were sounding outstanding. I got a chance to listen to some of the better speakers at the show and can say that they easily held their own in the top ten category (any price) at the show. The space, detail, frequency balance and dynamics were excellent. The woofers move a lot of air and play deep without overloading the room at all. I may be a little biased here so anyone that had a chance to hear them, please chime in.

Hi Chris,

I had a chance to listen to them, maybe spent 15-20min in the room. I remember that I liked them quite a bit. The one thing that stood out to me, and that I recall, was how well the speakers handled an upright bass -- very well done, nicely defined yet with solid, full resonances.

John

Interesting, wish I had still been in Denver. I ran a pair of RD-75's baffleless for a few years and while I had box bass covering 45-350, I really liked the sound. Wish I had tried the Audire Avalanche 18's with them in the way Chris has, instead of in an IB serving 10-50Hz reinforcement.
