Good looking power switch
« on: 7 Oct 2008, 02:57 pm »
Since my sb project is almost finished now, I am starting  to collect parts for my next project, a Twisted Pear Sympatico.

I am going to use a par metal case, antech transformers, with a few Felixes, one before each transformer.

It is a 3 ch amp, I am going to use it for the front 3 speakers of my HT setup.

Looking for a nice power switch.

I usually just use a toggle, and put the switch in the back.

For this design, the IEC is going on the side, power switch on front, with the Felixes and transformers at the front of the case, and the Sympatico modules on the rear wall.

Case is black.

Suggestions?  Would prefer a push button type.

Thanks
Randy

The Bulgin anti-vandal switches are the go-to cool looking push-buttons - http://www.bulgin.co.uk/Products/Switches/Switches.html

Most of them are momentary and would require a relay circuit (example with available PCB board - http://www.amb.org/audio/epsilon24/) some are illuminated too.

They aren't cheap, but they are durable (you often see these on elevators).

I like the ones from Partsconnexion, they got a good solid feel to them, and are made for soldering.

They cost nothing but work nice

Thanks for the replies

I want something better looking than a toggle switch, thinking a nice metal push button would look good.

That would work, but it's more complicated, and expensive than I would really like.  By the time I bought the AMB board, and all the parts and a nice switch, I'm guessing it would be close to $50.

Seems like somebody should make a nice looking switch for the front of my amp.

Yeah, the Bulgins can be expensive.  They make latching ones that wouldn't require a relay circuit, but they are only rated to 50VAC, so they aren't appropriate for mains power switching.  Those still cost $25 each.

This eBay store has a ton of different switches, including cheaper Bulgin knock-offs - http://stores.ebay.com/PARTSPIPE_ALL-SWITCHES_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ11012343QQftidZ2QQtZkm

This on in specific:

6A at 125V. Do you need more than that?

I should also add that I recently built a new stereo rig, and I just used simple 20A switches, however I did just order one of the nice Bulgin ones. With the controller and shipping and parts it wound up at $85. So no, not cheap.

I've bought some knobs from that guy.  He has a lot of interesting parts, mostly for the guitar amp building crowd but still interesting.
