Hey now...

I needs me a subwhoofer in a bad way.

I run Martin Logan SL3 electrostats.  Can't afford an ML sub.  I'm looking for something used in the $500 price range.  i was thinking of mid level velodynes, paradigm, Pinnacle babby boomer or my first choice the Vandersteen (if I can find a used one).

anything I should keep in mind trying to find something that will blend well?

hi. i was using quad esl-63's and found the babyboomer to be by far the best match in that price range. it just seemed quicker than the others i tried. i never tried the vandy, so that may be better, but i did have the opportunity to hear a hsu vtf-2, infinity il-120, m&k vx-7 and mx-700 in my home. the mx-700 was great too - comparible to the boomer, but tough to find for anywhere near $500.00.  i sold the 63's a while back and am now using morel full range floorstanders. i have the boomer available but haven't advertised it anywhere yet. i noticed on audiogon that the lowest price one ever sold at was $330.00. if you are interested i would let mine go for that to save myself the trouble of placing an ad. btw, my user name on both audiogon and e-bay is dogdog49 and i have 100% positive feedback on both sites.

A used Velodyne FS1500R is really nice, once you upgrade the power supply.  Simple to do.  It has the impact and the volume of sound as well as being extremely low distortion due to the servo control.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - as a certified bass fanatic, I've listened to almost every sub out there in a LOT of different applications, and IMO there is NO better sub for music than the VMPS Original sub, they simply keep up w/the signal better than anything else I've heard.  They re-produce not just the notes, but also the texture of the bass better than anything I've heard.  Woven carbon fiber woofer (very high stiffness/weight ratio, and very good self damping), natural rubber surround, and double stacked magnets and a properly sized enclosure all add up to bass that is deep, tight, and "fast".

Can the VMPS original sub be crossed over below 60hz?  Even with my monitor speakers I wouldn't want to cross over that high up -- more like 48hz.

All of the VMPS subs are passive.

They do not come with any amp or crossover.

You can match the sub with any amp you wish. I would suggest a "Pro Audio" amp, like something by Crown or QSC.

Marchand makes some vey nice crossovers at all different price points. They mostly use modules to set the crossover point, so you can put it anywhere you like.

I have recently installed a VMPS Larger sub and a tweaked Marchand crossover for a client to use with his VMPS RM-40s. He is currently using a crossover point at 40 hz.

The VMPS Original was first designed to be used with Quad ESL-63s. There should be no problem matching them up with ANY speaker as far as speed goes.

As another certified bass fanatic I will have to also recommend VMPS. You can get kits also and I'm sure there's not much to putting them together. The designer is an expert at designing world class bass for a reasonable price. A reputation since the late seventies.  The bass is real not the make believe crap that is available from most companies.  In other words the specs are real and not a guess at how much the bass will be with room augmentation. You can't go wrong.
