Odyssey Mono Extreme SE's/HT3 and Power Cords?
« on: 28 Sep 2008, 06:35 am »
I currently have Stratos Mono Extreme SE's, an HT3 for center and surrounds and a Candela.  I currently have all Groneberg Reference ICs, PCs and speaker cables.  Everything is powered off of 2x20a dedicated lines without any power conditioning, just a Belkin power strip for front-end components (amps are direct to the wall) with external whole house surge protection.

1.  What are you using for PCs with the Odyssey amps and Stratos?
2.  If you had Groneberg Reference before, why did you change?
3.  What improvements were noticed (if any) after the change (obviously very subjective and system dependent)?
4.  If you tried something else, did you go back to the Groneberg Reference?

Thanks for any info,
Mark

     Black Sands Silver MKV's
2.  If you had Groneberg Reference before, why did you change?
I switched from Standard Groneburg ICs and SCs to Grover SC - ICs and HT Pro 9 BiWire SCS.  I experimented with Straleys and       to me the current wires provide better sound in my system.
3.  What improvements were noticed (if any) after the change (obviously very subjective and system dependent)?
Honestly, changed to long ago to remember the exact details of the differences.
4.  If you tried something else, did you go back to the Groneberg Reference?
No, I wish I had purchased the Groneberg Reference Quality Cables but the nervosa of this hobby would have probably resulted in changes anyway.
Thanks for any info,
Mark

I highlighted my answers to your questions.  I do not know if you have experimented with other cables but it is the only way to tell if you should make changes.  Others will challenge this, they always do, if you have revealing speakers you will hear differences when you switch cables.  However, I would recommend against cable changes unless/until you have adequate room treatments.  Others recommended this approach to me and I have learned by adding room treatments that they do make significant impacts to the sound quality from a system.

Oh, my system:

Mono SE's (June, 2007 edition)
Odyssey Candela - RCA Cleartop Tubes
ModWright Tranporter
Grover's latest SC edition of ICs
Black Sands MKV -PCs to Amps, Preamp and Transporter
SP Tech Timepiece 2.1's
HT Pro 9 BiWire SCs.

Thanks and I appreciate all of your inputs!  I totally agree on the room treatments (the room is in a state of flux), but I'm just looking for what works best with the Odyssey amps and Candela with users here.

My system (ongoing):

Mono SE specials
HT3 SE Special
Candela w/Amperex Classic (best tube to date)
Sony CDP-C77ES (5 disc changer)
Oppo 983H
Sony BDP-S300
PS Audio Digital Link III w/Cullen level 4 mods
PS Audio Stream Plus PC for Candela

Wireworld Toslink/Coax for Sony and Oppo
Groneberg Reference ICs (all other components)
Groneberg Reference PCs (amps/DAC)
Groneberg Reference Triwire SCs
KEF Reference 205/2's
Processor TBD
Wireless Transport TBD

Thanks
Mark

1.  What are you using for PCs with the Odyssey amps and Stratos?
Odyssey stratos monos SE - Black Sand MKV,  Candela - MAC PC
2.  If you had Groneberg Reference before, why did you change?
Addicted to this hobby
3.  What improvements were noticed (if any) after the change (obviously very subjective and system dependent)?
Black sand slightly more high end openness and detail, MAC slightly warmer and more natural sounding
4.  If you tried something else, did you go back to the Groneberg Reference?
Ive tried volex cryoed and element cable PC's - Gronenbergs bested them all.

Best upgrade for me as far as power was installing an Albert Porter Hubbell cryoed porter port outlet to plug the Stratos Monos SE's into. - Cheap upgrade - great sound!  I have a new house with no known power problems. Can be found on audiogon.

Agree with room treatments and working on mine now.

Thanks for any info,
Mark
