Can you use a power book with external monitor, but closed?

I use my Dual Core power book primarily as a desktop machine, plugged
into a 30" Cinema display.  I was wondering to minimize use on the LCD
that came with the laptop, is there a way to shut that screen off, or better
yet, use the power book closed, but with the external monitor still on?

Thanks!!

Thanks for the try.

That works on a G4, but for some bizarre reason does not work on
an intel based Power Book...

I'll keep looking!

Jeff,

I use a mac book pro intel core 2 duo everyday at work with a separate LCD monitor (and a CRT last year).  90% of the time my MBP is powered on but sleeping (closed) when I connect all my cables: power, ethernet, power, USB (KB) and DVI. Then I just touch a key on the KB or move my mouse and the display powers on. been doing this for years and with a G4 PowerBook too. I have also connected the cables when my MBP is powered on and open then I close the MBP screen and touch the KB just like above.

One thing I can think of...If you have a wireless mouse and wireless keyboard that may be an issue for the MBP to sense these are active.
Another possibility is not having the power connected to the MBP-that usually prevents the external monitor turning on.

I do remember that there were some coworkers who have had some issues with closed macs not waking up. it was resolved somehow. I could check next week if your issue still persists.

I use a Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo as well, previously had a Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo (1st generation), and Powerbook 12" G4, and it has always worked the same for all of these models.

Thanks guys...

I must just be the odd man out.  I'll check with the genius dude at the
apple store.  I do not have a wireless keyboard or mouse, so this is
vexing to say the least.

Hmmm.

Works on 6 Intel Macbooks and Macbook Pros that I have.

Plug in the monitor and power with the computer closed and asleep. When you plug in the external keyboard it wakes up and uses the external monitor.
