Flood in U. City
« on: 17 Sep 2008, 02:16 pm »

 Hey Guys
My basement got flooded with the rains of Sunday morning.
I was able to save my Drums, amps and tubes. But I lost some vintage speakers and cabinets came down to
what got off the Floor first.

I posted some pictures on the Altec site, here's a link:

    Have fun!

That's horrible news.  Glad the VOT survived and you were able to save all the tubes.  I would never have thought your house could have flooded like that.  Take care!

Jeez Willie, sorry to hear that. I lost my mailbox and rear fence in the flood--I could literally walk off my deck into Kirkwood Creek but luckily my basement stayed dry. Good luck with the cleanup.

Sorry to hear that Willie.  Glad you managed to get most of it up off the floor.  The biggest thing is that you're OK and nobody was hurt.

It could've been a lot worse...

My families business manages a lot of rental properties there that back up to the River Des Perre.

Not only did the water rise above the level of the stoves stoves in 44 first floor units, a body was found floating in the parking lot.   The same parking lot
where a # of Residents had to be evacuated by the Coast Guard. (from a parking lot)

too crazy and so scary.     1 entire large property was condemned.

luckily the body was not one of our Residents.      :o

Sorry to hear that Willie, that's a shame. I know it doesn't help much, but at least it was all just "stuff" that got wet and nobody got hurt.
Is it worth reporting to insurance?

Glad to hear you were able to save most of your stuff. We were lucky, we only had just a little bit of water come in the basement which is really unusual for the amount of rain we got.

Hi Willie,

Somehow I missed this before, glad you and your family are O.K.
You went through what must be most of ours worst nightmare, major water in the basement!  Glad you salvaged most of your stuff. If you haven’t already, I would make a complaint with MSD, who knows what may happen. Florissant was on the radio today telling their residents to complain/file a claim with MSD.

A friend living in Berkeley would have his sewer back up regularly with more normal rains; it stopped after MSD roto-rooted the main down the street.

I haven’t been able to find them on the web, but they do make devices you can put in the floor drains to prevent back-ups. Basically a check valve, allows water in but not back out. It contains a ball that rises with the backup water and makes a seal preventing water in the basement.

Hopefully your flood is a one-time thing, I heard these hurricanes and the rains they bring are on a 20 or 40 year cycle?

What is Baltic Birch? I bought some ¾ Birch plywood from Lowes for some shelves as they were out of the regular plywood. The Birch has a lot more flex than the regular stuff. Next time I’ll wait for the more rigid stuff!

Hope to see you Saturday!

I believe Baltic Birch is "voidless" as opposed to regular plywood. {Furniture grade}

Hey Willie,

sorry to hear of your loss.  I can remember many good times, good tunes and amazing equipment in your basement.  The first time I came over I was speechless when we walked downstairs.  Do you need any hands on help?  Alex

For your concern, slowly getting back to almost normal.
Back to listening and DIYing again.
Got my new Birch Cabinets for my 604's on order, should be in next week.
