Finally getting off my *ss to get my system installed

Brad

I commute 45+ minutes each way in Houston traffic.

I've been living with the stock Chrysler system for quite a while - cd/cassette w/"premium" speakers.  Decent, best factory stereo I've had, but time for something more.  Finally decided to get things done.  Scheduled for the weekend of the 22nd.

Going in:    Clarion Pro Audio head unit.  Also has aux input.
Main amp:   McIntosh 4x75
Sub amp:    Rockford/Fosgate 200ix
Front speakers:   Just decided - CDT HD-63Dt Braxials
Rear fill:    Chrysler - but if I need to, will use CDT Classic series coax's
Sub:     JL Audio 12" ProWedge box

Most of this stuff has been sitting in my garage for a long time.
I guess I've been avoiding becoming a theft target again - I've lost 2 different systems here in Houston over the last 10 yrs.

Unused items for now:

Planet Audio 2x75 amp w/vaccuum tube input stage
Dynaudio 240 separates (didn't want to mess with a difficult install)
MB Quart 3 way separates system w/Pro x-overs

I think I need to build some enclosures for the leftover speakers and try them in the house.

Whaddya think?

Are really going to run the stock Chrysler speakers as rear fill?  If I were you I would not even bother.  Besides, rear fill only really benefits people in the back seat and who cares about them, right? :P

I did this with my wife's Jetta.  The front's are Polk separates but, we left the rears for filler.  Guess what the weakest sounding part of her system is?

Since I don't have to drive it, it doesn't bug me but, she's been talking about changing those speakers ever since we upgraded over a year ago... but, it's low priority.

I would HIGHLY recommend doing as stealthy of an install as possible.  Remove your faceplate as much as you can remember to..  Put the tweeters in the same place as the originals.. etc.

Good luck.  If you were local, I'd be glad to help out.

I'm going with coaxes in the door because I hate the disjointed sound you get from having woofs in the door and tweeters way up in the dash.

I'll leave the tweeters in the dash for when I sell the car.
Slap the factory 'premium' radio back in at that point, too.  The clock on it gains about 2 minutes/week, which has been kinda annoying.

The stock speakers are not bad - and I listen with the fader pretty far forward to the point where you can't tell the rears are working.  It's a pretty easy swap later if it becomes obviously necessary to do so.

I've actually not used rear fill at all in the previous 2 vehicles I had and can't say that I missed it.   Thought I'd give it a shot anyway.   I'm guessing it'll be loud enough from the front for the kids to hear it in the back seat.

Thanks for the tips.

Brad,

Wow, that system sounds great!!  As you know, I put CDT's in my Evo.  While they won't win any SPL awards, they are excellent SQ speakers.   I found it took about 10 days for the tweeters to break in and smooth out.  At first, they were a bit sharp, but now I can listen as loud as I can stand with no fatigue.  The tweets on the CDTs are very smooth.

The mids are very good but could have better definition.  Still highly acceptable.  Eventually, I might go with the top of line CDT eurosports, but for now I am excessively satisfied.  :-)

With the Braxials, you should be able to install the speaks in the factory locations behind the factory door grills.  They are deep, so you might have to jig a spacer out of MDF (depending on your door depth).  That should keep your install pretty stealthy.  But if you have all this neato stuff in your garage unused, it's just like it's already stolen anyway, so you might as well get some good use.

That McIntosh amp should be sweet!  Must have a reveiw when everything is installed and broken in!

Calling me out, eh, John

Actually, I decided to hold off because I think I'm going to trade my car in on a truck.
Still have a big pile o' equipment 'idling' out in the garage....
