Cartridge upgrade! Should I increase gain in bugle?

I am moving up from an Audio Technica 110E with 4.5 mV output to a Denon 110 "high" output moving coil with 1.6 mV output, should I increase the gain in my bugle? if so, should I  go to 50 db or all the way to 60 db? I already tried the Denon with the stock bugle configuration and I do have to turn that volume dial up quite a bit in my Jolida amplifier. If I do increase the gain what can I expect, because I understand that lower the gain, the more quiet the preamp is. Any advice guys?

King (REY in Spanish if you didn't know )

The Denon is really 2.2mv as found by Jerry Raskin at the Needle Doctor:

Quote from: Needle Doctor
Jerry Raskin comments on the Denon Debate
"The owners manual claims in both English and Japanese I.6mV output. But when I tested the cartridge it produced a 2.2mV output. That's the difference between being easy to use, or a tweak cartridge. I've always suspected the output was higher then claimed."

I moved from 4+ mv cartridges to a 2.2mv Denon DL-160 recently, and at least with my current preamp, needed no further gain to eek out good sounds.  So, your current gain level could be sufficient already on your Bugle.

Food for thought - Enjoy, John

Thanks thechairguy,it is not that I don't get good sound from the cartride, but definitely I have to turn that volume knob at least a quarter more in order to get the volume level I usually listen to. I guess I will give it a try and see what happens.

I thought it was REX.  Or is that latin?  From the sounds of it, I would try the gain as it is.  If you can clip your power amps with the linestage set to 4:00 position, you have enough gain.  If it is too quiet for you, then try the 50dB setting.

I was using this cartridge with the bugle set for 44db and it was just about the right setting i say.
