Wayner likes the Audio Technica 440MLA, others like the Grado's, and I just ordered an ADC XLM MK II.  Lots of good choices for $100-200.

Hey Derockster, I just picked up a SL-1210 M5G and am using the AT 440 MLa to great effect.  If you streatch your budget to $250, I hear the AT 150 MLX is very good with the technics tonearm.  See this review where the reviewer used a Technics SL 1200, for example:

Hi there, I have an Audio-Technica AT33PTG Prestige MC Stereo Cartridge that has about 400 hours on it...
Here's a link: http://www.audiocubes2.com/brand/Audio-Technica/product/Audio-Technica_AT33PTG_Prestige_MC_Stereo_Cartridge.html?osCsid=2cf154d8e1bcafa435590b8d06372968

it retails for $399 and well, how about $200 shipped for it?

Let me know....
Thanks

Is your phono amp MM or MC (or your integrated amp/receiver)?

I have a AT 150 cart. sounds great on my SL1210 and a bargain now at 250 online. orig around 400 I think.

The AT 440 will work for you or Sonny's AT33 if you have MC capability. both in your range.

Wayner likes the Audio Technica 440MLA, others like the Grado's, and I just ordered an ADC XLM MK II.  Lots of good choices for $100-200.

Did it come integrated with the headshell as he had been selling them, Scott?  Just make sure it was the right headshell for your deck (they usually are, but ADC had tonearms that had a different headshell on them, hence the proviso here) and $79 is a screaming deal for the old XLM Mk. II.  It is truly a landmark cartridge from the late 70's - generally held in much higher esteem back them than the Shure V15's and others (Grado wasn't in the same league as ADC circa-1979).

Not much in the way of advancements have gone on in high output moving magnets or Induced Magnet (which is what the ADC is...otherwise known as a moving iron cartridge) in the past 30 years (development of it has taken a back seat to CD most substantially and secondarily to low output moving coils, featuring better electrical specs from the get-go, too)

I gave Derockster (Cleaton) the same recommendation for it, but I think SoundsUnique has not answered his email to ship to him in sunny Barbados.

Cleaton - if it doesn't cost you a whole salary to call the US from Barbados (try SKYPE from your computer for very low rates if it does), you might want to call Mike at Sounds Unique.  He's not a youngster and might respond to a call rather than an email faster.

Regards,

John from foggy San Francisco  :)

Mine is going to run $89 + 5 shipping with the appropriate headshell.  I saw someplace on the web trying to sell just the stylus for $149
In the meantime while waiting for it to arrive, I have begun cutting and squaring bits of mesquite to glue up a "cutting board".  Mesquite is denser than Maple and my front pasture/yard is full of the stuff.  I may mix in some oak to break up any resonance patterns.  I'll let you know what I think.  Mesquite is definitely a pretty wood.

...and odoriferous.  Nothing wrong with a sound room smelling like ribs now, does it

The ADC is truly a stand-out cartridge.....every vinyl-phile should probably own one once in their lives just to compare their current fave to it.  It may not be the final one you listen to, but it's a helluva' good listen and the most linear cartridge I have ever heard (it's flat + or - 1.5db out to 24Khz...I don't think I've ever seen another maker of cartridges ever offer that spec)

The new Ortofon 2m Red and 2M Blue are hard to beat in their price-ranges. A little "meatier" sounding than the AT 440MLa.

It will be interesting to compare notes.  Mine won't arrive until late next week, but I will be glad to hear your impressions after you get yours set up.

FINALLY got my cartridge and tried to install it yesterday.  Nothing is going to happen easy on this I fear.  The arm on my JVC QL F-6 has some weird connection that goes with a dj Ortofon cartridge--and will not accept the new ADC cartridge.  The tone arm appears to have 4 gold pressure connections, no pin, no male or female sections.  Does this mean that my goal of trying to upgrade from my B&O for only a couple of hundred bucks is dead and I now have to try to buy and install a new arm??

It seems that this is going to take more time, effort, and money than I had hoped.

Advice anyone??  John, Wayner?

I sounds like you have a "P" style mount on the end of your tonearm. Not seeing any pictures, does the tonearm end have 4 pin holes in the end? It should also have a thumb screw hole a little farther up the arm. If this is the case, you need a "P" style adaptor. The problem is that I have not seen one that can convert a regular cartridge into a "P" style. I have 2 that do it the other way around were you can convert a "P" style to a regular. I don't even know if they make such a beast.

I will look around.
