C'mon Frank, write a book...
« on: 30 Aug 2008, 06:08 pm »
Three things inspire me to post this topic:

1. TAS interview with Mike Kay from Lyric HiFi. This guy was there when lots of the names and brands were introduced. A bit later, perhaps, but so was Frank.

2. I called AVA Friday when Frank wasn't there, but had a wonderful conversation with a recently retired woman who worked with Frank for 30 years. I mentioned that she must have a lot of great memories, not to mention all the personalities, etc. that Frank worked with over the years. She agreed and explained that...

3. ...Frank has a knack for great writing. Just think of all his posts and previous newsletters.

And, what company in business for as long as AVA HiFi, are you likely to have the main man answering the phone? No one but Frank.

Then it hit me. A memoir. A cocktail table book. Better yet, a hifi listening room book!!!! So, Frank, I'll put my advance order in now. As told by an unsung hero of hifi...

Anyone else agree?

I think I've talked to Frank about this awhile ago. There is a fine line between history and the publics "right to know" stuff. As some of you may know, this thing called life has some tragedy involved as with anyone. The little boxes we buy from Frank spew with intellect, but they all have stories behind them. Do I think Frank should write a book? Hell ya! I'd love to "take notes", but it's hard to go into someones life and not feel like your prying.

Hey, for a small company with people like Patty that have worked there forever, it certainly would be a great read. maybe Frank will entertain the idea. There are quite a few folks behind the scenes that help make AVA work, so it's not just a Frank thing either. Time will tell.

I'd actually like to see a history.  As in, a history of the products.  I have been with Frank ever since I bought a FET-5 Mark 2 preamp - the one Harry raved about.  It has been upgraded a couple times.  We've seen FETValves morph to Transcendence to Ultras, and we've seen MOSFETs go to Deltas to Omegas to Insights.  And for each one we've seen incremental, progressive changes introduced.  I, for one, would be really interested in the progression of changes and an understanding of why the changes were made.

Let's not forget the Differential gear. 'Progression; almost seems like an understatement, but it certainly is and it's certainly impressive. From the earliest Audio Basics, it seems Frank has tried to tell anyone who would pay attention "Pay attention. This is how this works..." Or at least IMHO. Every step of the progression seems like proof of his conviction. I'm not that easily impressed by much, but everything about AVA, the products, the music, and Frank himself impresses me imensely.

I agree. A history would be cool. With pictures of the different products, specs, prices, maybe a couple of old advertisements, and vignettes from Frank regarding the gear (good or bad), the people he's worked with, different trends in the industry that pi$$ed him off when he made the gear being discussed, about the Audio Basics days, current and past inspirations, etc. Maybe even a peek into theory regading future products as well.

I'd buy the Deluxe Edition for the coffee table; for sure! :thumb:

Have fun,
Jerry

I have read Audio Basics soo many times, I would like to hear the rest of the story. You know, from wiring Dyna kits with Paul and amps in briefcases and upsidedown name tags and I sure there are many more stories to tell over the 40 years.   :smoke:

What if "Audio Basics" was turned into a booK? Would there be enough interest to make it worth while?
