Earthquake CineNova Grande 5 Amp
« on: 11 Nov 2003, 11:31 am »
I just ran across someone that owned this multi-channel amp.  I knew they made car audio equipment but didn't know they were into home audio.  Anyone have familiarity with this amp?  I know it is rated @ 300W X 5 @ 8 ohms but that doesn't tell me squat.  Is this basically a "noise" amp versus one that has a sound quality about it (e.g., Krell, Classe', Anthem, etc.)?

Please advise.

Thanks...

Jim

Hi there, I owned 3 of the 3 channel Cinenovas, and drove Dynaudio Special 25s (tough, revealing loads) to ludicrous levels with them, and they never showed any strain or even got warm. They get my highest recommendation. The reason that I changed is twofold -- My wife wanted a single chassis, and I really wanted balanced inputs (which they have since fixed with the new 'signature' version -- which I have never heard)

I changed to an ATI 3007, and noticed no noticeable change in sound.

YMMV,

I have the 3 channel running my RM-40s and while it isn't the AMPzilla or the Bryston, it most certainly is powerful, dynamic, and very low noise.

Also as a dealer I have placed many of the CineNovas, and they perform quite well.

I have A/B'd them with the Theta DN, the Krell 300watter, and many other amps and I would say in a true blind taste test most would not be able to tell the difference.

The Big Brystons are slightly better, and the AMPzilla is certainly better.  That might also make the Pass and the Mark Levinson better too acording to Anthony Cordesman, but in talking Power AMps they certainly are a bargain at street prices.

edit:  I forgot you ask about noise.  There is NONE!  Distortion "goes down" as the power level goes up (rated at .003%) and the Signal to Noise is typically 112.

Comparable price and performance can also be found from the new ATI line and the new ADCOM amps re-desinged by the old Cal Audio guys.

As a word of caution, if the amp is "advertised" on the internet, or through an auction the company says they will not warrant it.

Also if it is a used amp, the warrantee is "supposed to be" for the original owner only, but if you call Earthquake, in advance of purchase they will probably allow a transfer.
