SB3 display slow to change
« on: 28 Aug 2008, 07:44 pm »
To all SB3 owners-

Anyone have a slow change of the display on the SB3, I have a connection via a router and Itunes as the source, with about about 9600 songs.

Would the larger volume of files make it slow????

Mine seems to be a little slower to show what is actually playing.   I have not noticed specifically if it is slow to change music as well.  I have noticed once that the Duet screen was showing the Artist before the laptop that I am running Squeezecenter on.  I don't know that I have really much helpful information for you.  It may be your router?  I have been "encouraged" to get a new router by the techs with SqueezeBox.  Mine is an older 802.11b and they say that may be the cause of some issues that I have had.  Namely, the Duet not recognizing the network even though I am able to play music from my comp using the SqueezeCenter network.

Have you called customer support?

My SB3 displayed slowed down when the remote batteries were low. Might check that.

What is the signal strength on your Squeezebox? Sounds like you have interference from something and when the signal is low everything gets choppy.

Mine was also slow, until I scolded it and gave it a round thrashing.

I had a problem where the display slowed down, to the point that the display might be about two songs behind the music that was actually playing.  Problems of this nature don't seem related to wireless signal strength or anything like that, as the trasfer of music is not affected.

Perhaps yours is like my problem - an issue of the CPU of your server being overburdened.

Check how much of your CPU capacity is being used while the display is slowing down.  If there are a lot of processing resources being used, then your display may well slow down a lot.  While my processor is pretty speedy, and I had no other applications running when my display slowed, I was making use of the Inguz room correction plug-in for the squeezebox - and it was an old manifestation that used processing capacity pretty intensively.  If something like this is slowing you down, look for processes that you can terminate.

Thanks to all for the ideas-

Chadh might be onto something, so I will check it out. It might be my CPU trying to do work when it is indeed overtaxed. I also considered buffer over capacity as well. Will post the solution when I get it.

As a follow-up, I have figured out that my EMAC was slowed down by too many processes running at the same time. After I installed a MacIntosh maintenance cleanup program (OnyX 1.8.5), it worked a bit faster. I am using Itunes 8.0.1 as my source for music.

More importantly, I found out that I needed to download the latest SqueezeCenter, which is SC 7.2. then I TURN OFF the scanning function. It seemed that when I was trying to utilize the Squeezebox3 (SB3) while it was RESCANNING the HD, the whole process made the display very slow. Now the SB3 is not rescanning the HD every time I turn it on.

Here's a recap

1 Download and run a cleanup program for the computer (OnyX 1.8.5 is suited for a EMAC running Tiger 10.5)

2 Install the latest SqueezeCenter 7.2 and turn off the scanning function.

3 Ensure the SB3 is not rescanning the HD everytime you power up the SB system and that you are only accessing Itunes for your Itunes music playlists.
