Cornet2 with volume control (attenuation)
« on: 28 Aug 2008, 04:19 am »
I'll be putting together a Cornet2 very shortly, but wanted to get some advice and clarification on a mod I'll would like to included in this project.

I have a pair of active powered speaker monitors that I'm currently using, and was hoping to build a simple passive volume control in the Cornet2 box for a more streamlined signal path.  Has anyone attempted this?  Thinking a nice DACT attenuator would do the trick.
Anyone recommend impedance level for the attenuator?

Is it better to build a separate box for volume?

Thanks

I built my purely passive preamp into a Hammond pcb box.  Cost 20 bucks and looks very professional.  Using the DAC you only need some decent chassis RCA's and a quality selector switch.  I like the Carsten Electronics pieces but I am not sure where they are available.  My source just discontinued carrying them due to low volume sales.  This is Reno NV....

BTW I built a Clarinet line stage and damn, it absolutely destroys the sound quality of my purely passive preamp.  This is not a close call.  If you like slam and effortless dynamics start budgeting for a Clarinet.

If you build a separate purely passive preamp you can always reconfigure these into a Clarinet in the future.  You can start purely passive now and then branch into a Clarinet down the road.

Well, I suppose you could replace R207 with 100k log volume pot and change R204 to 39k or so to compensate EQ.  Overall gain will drop a few dB.  Maybe 40dB total gain at 1k.  Then make C203 a 150nF or 220nF to keep the bass.

I haven't tried this, but it might work ok.

Jh.

So this chase can it still consider a passive V.control since it is place between v1 and v2?  And any help to replace the gain?

many thanks,
