Is this a bad joke?
« on: 25 Aug 2008, 08:52 pm »

I was browsing over at Audiogon a few minutes ago, and noticed an ad at the top of a page.  It was for Krell's iPod dock, the KID (or Krell Interface Dock).  But I almost died when I saw the new companion component they were introducing.

I quote from the ad:

Introducing the PAPA dock for the KID, adding legendary Krell power amplification and power supplies to give you a complete solution to iPod music.

PAPA dock?  What are they thinking?

I checked the Krell webpage, and found no reference to the PAPA Dock.  So, maybe it was all just a bad dream.

Why is it a bad dream?

A lot of companies have gone to lifestyle type systems for
the iPod crowd.  With uncompressed or lossless tunes, it's not
bad sound either.

What's so bad about it?

They are branching out into cookware with thier "Pole Pot" and nitrogenous dietary supplements with their "Eaty-Amine" lines.

Next up, low-cal meats under the "Muscle Leanie" brand.

Oh, I don't know.  Probably because Papa Doc was responsible for the death of about 30,000 people after pronouncing himself "President for Life" in Haiti.

I think the only way people will get back into audio again is if companies find innovative good sounding solutions that fit peoples lifestlye. We have no probs with the streamers we customize to 5X their big box store prices but like you I kinda scoffed at the Krell. Initial reaction I guess.

Great marketing move Krell.  Not quite as bad as the "iBeat Blaxx" one from last year, but ranking quite high on the list.

krell might be feeling the crunch of slow sales across the board so they are trying to make something mass market
this dilutes the brand
some say that altec, jbl, and bose were saved by ipod docs   yes, mass market stuff, but you see the point

I particularly liked this line:
"Also, frankly, I am a bit disturbed about a KID that mates with the Papa. It all just seems wrong to me."

Safe to assume not too many Haitians will be lining up for this one.

Along similar lines (ill-chosen product names): anyone remember some sort of candy-like product called AIDS, back in the early 'eighties? (please, I'm not 'dating myself', in fact I'm happily married). What do you think the executives of that company thought when the disease's name came into popular usage? Except those poor guys had no idea; at least Krell had the benefit of history to avoid this blunder.

Oooh, here's another marketing masterstroke, this time from the Parks and Recreation Commission of Washtenaw County, Michigan (my county).

In an effort to clear non-native shrubbery from various county parks, the county is inviting all residents to pull on their work gloves and join their "Whacking Woodies" program.

I don't think it matters how hard I look, though; nothing is going to trump the iBeat Blaxx.

What you fail to grasp is that there are a ton of people out there that have iPods.

There are also a ton of people that love music and want good sound but have
no interest in becoming audio hobbyists.

Why is it a joke for KRELL to make a product like this? It is made to the same
high standards as the rest of their products, so how does it dilute the brand?

There is nothing mass-market about a $4000 iPod dock/amp combo.

Jeff -

I think ChadH is referring to calling the new item from Krell Papa Dock...a passing reference to Papa Doc Duvalier, the former (brutal) dictator in Haiti.  He was followed by his near-equally malicious son, Baby Doc.

http://www.giles.34sp.com/biographies/papadoc.htm

So, I don't Chad is poking fun at Krell for providing a Ipod dock for non-audiophiles....it's just the poor choice of names.

Whit has little to do with the wisdom of naming a product in honor of a brutal dictator.

Ciao, John
