Need help with Nuendo / RME Digi 9652
« on: 23 Aug 2008, 07:02 pm »
I recently got a Nuendo made RME Digi 9652 sound card to use for playback and recording with Sonar and am not able to get it to output any signal. I'm fairly certain it is a software issue as it worked properly before I received it. If anyone is familiar with this card  I would sure appreciate some help.

I have a fairly new PC running Win XP sp2. I cleaned the contacts on the card per the manufacturers instructions on the RME forum and have tried it in all my available slots (3). I installed it per the detailed instructions from the RME website using driver 2.11. It is recognized in both Sonar and Foobar but with no output. Oddly when I go to the control panel in Windows under sounds and audio devices> properties>audio it is not listed. However in System Properties > Device Manager > Hardware > Sound Video and Game controllers it is listed as functioning properly.

I am using the red s/pdif output from the main card running into my AVA DAC. I have been using an EMU 0404 usb with the digital s/pdif output from that going to my DAC and it still functions with Foobar and Sonar so I know that the rest of the signal path is good.

Thanks!
RMS

Okay - I got it working with Sonar, I had to put a .dll in the Win System folder and then was able to properly configure the output channels in Sonar. However Foobar still won't work - I wonder if I need a .dll for Foobar that is specific to the RME card? That I don't know and can't find any info. on anywhere. So - if anybody has setup Foobar to work with an RME card or - if you know of another program that I can use to playback .flac, .wav, or even CD's with the RME card please let me know. Right now for playback I am having to convert my .flac files from Foobar back to .wav then import one song at a time into Sonar to listen. It works and sounds great but is far from ideal.

Thanks,
RMS

I got it to work, so here's the deal in case anyone else has trouble setting Foobar v0.8.3 up with a new sound card. In Foobar under Preferences > Playback > Output > Asio (dll version) you have to select your card in the "Output" selection, AND change the "Shift Output channels" selection to correspond with the output channel on your particular card. In my case for the RME Digi 9652 the s/pdif output channel happens to be located at 24. When I went to 25 I got a Foobar error message, and at anything less than 24 had no sound. With the EMU 0404 USB the "Shift Output channels" had to be set at 2 for it to function.

It was worth the expense and effort. The clarity, detail, imaging, soundstage, all very noticeably improved. There also had been some slight fuzziness or distortion noticeable at times with the EMU which is now gone.
