Fried Green Tomatoes

Hi All,

Has anyone ever eaten "Fried Green Tomatoes"? The trick is finding real Green tomatoes. Check farmer's markets, or ask a friend with a home garden to save you a few.

Here's my southern style recipe: javascript:void(0);
Drool

1. Heat 1/2 inch of corn oil or canola oil in an 8" round iron skillet.
2. Sift 1 cup of all purpose white flour into a bowl.
3. Add 1/2 cup of your favorite bread crumbs (mine is Italian bread crumbs) to the bowl.
4. Add salt & ground black pepper to taste. You can also add some Cajun seasoning to spice it up.
5. Pour the flour and bread crumbs into a gallon size Zipper bag.
6. Slice a medium size green tomato.
7. Pour 1/2 cup of butter milk into a flat bottomed bowl or a large dinner plate.
8. Dip a slice of tomato into the butter milk, and turn it over to get both sides wet.
9. Drop the tomato slice into the zipper bag. Close the bag, and shake it well.
10. Repeat this process until all tomato slices are covered with flour and crumbs.
11. Remove the tomato slices from the bag, and drop them into the hot oil.
12. After about 2 minutes, turn the slices over to fry the top sides.
13. Remove the tomatoes from the oil when they look golden brown and crispy.
14. Place the slices on paper towels to drain excess oil. Let them cool for about 5 minutes.
15. Pop the top on a cold beer, and enjoy your "Southern Fried Green Tomatoes".

Let me know how you like them.

We make ours with corn meal instead of the bread crumbs and flour.  They are very good!  Everyone should try them.

Craig,

Corn meal works great too.

It's really hard to find good "greenies" up here in New Jersey, but I have a friend who grows them all summer.

Fired okra is awesome too.  aa
