For those of us who want something a little more "compact" and maybe "simple" than a big ugly SLA battery.  I kind of like the idea of keeping the batteries "small and easy".

What about using (4) 7.2 V, 250 mah, NIMH 9v replacement rechargeables.  I was thinking connecting 2 cells in series.  7.2 V*2 to give me 14.4 V, 250 mah (is that right?).  This would give me about 250/30 mah or 8 hours or playback in theory??  I'd be happy with 6 hours of playback.  Honestly I rarely ever get a chance to play more than 4 side of lp in a single session.  All I need is a good 2 or 3 hours of strong playtime and I'd be real happy.  The batteries will probably spend more time discharging when I'm not listening, that's why I want rechargeables (painfull to wake up to a forgotten power switch and find disposable cells depleted).  I think I'm ok with 500 charges and buying new cells, I wouldn't need new chargers the second time around.

You'll probably have to rechard batteries in parallel.  Or standalone.  When operating cells in series, make sure they are balanced, as you don't want one quitting before the other or you get a reverse current through the dead cell (voltage flip).  It's like charging a cell backwards.  Anyway, with a BUGLE, the current draw is so low that it won't be a huge problem.
