"...a raid system to store my couple of thousand cd as flack...""A couple thousand CDs"!? ...Serious about your music huh?
I just got a Trends UD-10 USB > S/PDIF converter. Using FB2000 + ASIO, its far better than my Yamaha CD burner as a transport. When I upgrade my computer, I'll do a sys restore on my current laptop and use it as a music server. It also has a cd drive so I can play cds on it too. You can find XP based laptops that would be suitable for about $350, add $99 for a 500 gig drive...
i would second any transport that uses the pioneer stable-platter mechanism. but, expect to pay at least $300 for one. i happen to enjoy my audio alchemy acd pro, which i felt i stole, purchased locally for ~$250...doug s.

This way's more natural and transparency sounding.
