I used to use a $150 Philips DVD player hooked up to a 47 Labs Shigaraki DAC with good results.  It's since been moved back for HT duty as I got the matching 47 Labs Shig transport.

You can usually find a couple of Sony DVP-S7700 DVD players on e-bay fairly cheap. They are a little long in the tooth now, but are built like battleships and make excellent transports.

I have a Sony DVP S7000ES player in great condition.  I am not using it anymore and will gladly part with it for $100.  It makes a great transport.  Bill

Why not just us a PS3? It's much better than all of the above players mentioned. Plus it plays Blu Ray movies which are spectacular. Not to forget that Criterion uses the PS3 as their reference transport as well. At $399 it's really a no brainer!

  I changed from a Volex 17604 to a Lessloss power cord and was suprised by the difference it made on the APL Denon 3910 that I use as a transport.

i would second any transport that uses the pioneer stable-platter mechanism.  but, expect to pay at least $300 for one.  i happen to enjoy my audio alchemy acd pro, which i felt i stole, purchased locally for ~$250...

Wondering about picking up a backup CD player (99% of my playback is a music server) so I did a little research and ended up at this thread. Though I have a Denon DVD player, I think the spindle mechanism is fairly noisy....noticeable in quiet music passages.  This new CD player would be a transport connected to an external DAC.

So I have these questions for the Oppo owners: Noisy or quiet?  Any particular Oppp model recommended over other?

Any others mfgs to consider? The Sony ES seems like a possibility but I would rather h ave something a bit massive (though still tank-like).

Prefer it to be in $100 range. used is fine (maybe).

I just got a Trends UD-10 USB > S/PDIF converter. Using FB2000 + ASIO, its far better than my Yamaha CD burner as a transport. When I upgrade my computer, I'll do a sys restore on my current laptop and use it as a music server. It also has a cd drive so I can play cds on it too. You can find XP based laptops that would be suitable for about $350, add $99 for a 500 gig drive...

DaveC, I should've been more clear....I am looking for a standalone CD player to use as a transport. I already have the computer side covered. I can play a CD in my G5 or any computer connected to the hard drives. But was looking for something as a backup so in case I didn't want to fire up the puter which in the other room

But on the hand, sometime this winter or next spring I plan to get a Panasonic BlueRay player. IF that is quieter than my Denon DVD it would work depending on the output available. Then I would have one less fewer boxes!

Go with the Oppo or the Marantz 5001CDP.  I modded my Music Hall 25.2 CDP with RAM and I'm not impressed.  It was a waste of money.  It took most of the transparency and openess (which are the strengths of this player) away and made it a more foward, aggressive sound.

I've the same player pairing with many DACs but after all I'm using it alone without the external dac. This way's more natural and transparency sounding.

have you tried a modded art di/o?  i have put mine up against many wery expensive rigs, (w/different transports), up to $8k, and nothing has beaten it.  the hi-dollar stuff seems about the same...  i have never tried my acd pro w/o dac, it might be interesting to try...
