Sub questions - infinite baffle and free air
« on: 13 Aug 2008, 08:49 pm »
Since I have more time than money right now, I am still thinking about doing two 6-8in subs in my backdoors of my mazdaspeed3 to compliment the 7" components I will put in front that play down to 50-60hz.  All I would need these drivers to do is play sub 60hz with as linear freq response as possible.  I was thinking putting them in a door would be an infinite baffle situation, but is this the same as free air configuration?  I don't know if those 2 terms have the same meaning.  I know IB needs to have the front and back of the driver completely isolated to reduce cancellations, and you still need to figure out a manifold design for best sq.  There would be no box in the door, and I think isolating the front and back of a driver would be difficult with the thin material covering the door.  Is this even worth looking into or will it sound horrible?  Is my best bet for sq to build a 10" in a sealed box in the spare tire well?  Thanks for any information you have.

I would agree that in the context of car audio IB and free air are the same - typically a board was built behind the rear seats, with the subs built into the board.

I would stay away from using small subs in rear doors of your car, and proceed directly to the sealed 10 - way better idea in my books.
