Hey, just got myself some Neo-2x and I'm anxious to listen to them soon.  However, I'm not in a house anymore so I'm wondering how the heck I'm going to do the burn in on those.  If I leave them playing a bit loud all day long for several days my neighbors are gonna want to kill me.  If I don't, it's going to take forever.  So for now my plan is to let them play all day long but at a low volume so neighbors don't ear them but I don't think this will achieve the goal on the woofers if they are not rocked hard for some hours.  Any of you have a special trick to share?  Thanks.

Hey!

   Well, you could try an old trick. Put them face to face as close as you could get them together. Than reverse the polarity one one side by reversing the speaker connection.

   This way the wave should cancel each other out. No, it won't eliminate all sound coming out from them but this should make it lower.

   Or you could knock on your neighbors and give them some earplugs to use for a few days.... just kidding

You can also put a blanket over the speakers, configured as described above to absorb more of the sound during breakin.

I was going to say the same thing as Set Man.  Roy at Green Mountain recommends that approach.

What I would add is to get the Isotek System Enhancer disk.  It will seriously speed the process and does not need to played excessively loud to work.  The rest of your system will benefit at the same time.

Hum, reverse polarity, that's an interesting trick, I'll certainly use this one.  Those are not very big and I think I have a big box I could fit both of them in with some blankets or towels, I guess this should do the trick while ensuring my neighbors still love me a few weeks from now!   

Is this the disk you guys are talking about?  Interesting, I'll locally if I can find it otherwise I saw a few online stores who sell it.

Yes, that is it.  You probably would use track one - it is for smaller speakers.

Starting today my Mini's will be on an audition tour with members of the NY Audio Rave....so they can have an opportunity to try them in their systems....and comment on how they performed.

This is the absolute coolest way I have ever seen any type of break in whatsoever. I'm not sure that was the intent, but it's happening nonetheless. Man, you can make some friends, find out cool thoughts on your speaks, break 'em in, and not torque your neighbors at the same time! 

I'm sure if you asked how the logistics of lonewolf's gracious gig has been handled to care for the speakers themselves you'd get a great answer...

Better yet....loan them to your neighbors Loft....they can break them in for you (at whatever volume)...and enjoy their music. Who's going to complain....not you.

That's an easy answer...all who are listening are NYAR members....and they take good care of their (and my) equipment. Great bunch of guys...

Haha, you wise guys!  Normally I wouldn't mind loaning my speakers if I had good ones to listen to in the mean time but there is no way I'm going to continue listening to those FR125 fullrange while MY brand new Neo-2x are traveling across North America and I have to suffer reading all sorts of drooling comments from happy folks that I'm such a nice guy loaning them my marvelous sounding speakers!   

Thanks for the suggestions for cooking instructions though.  I'll enjoy posting my own comments on how good those new speakers sound while they are cooking in reverse polarity!

I have a question about this old trick.
In order for the signals from the two speakers to cancel each other out, wouldn't you need to have the same signal going into both speakers so that the two speakers are produce "mirror images" ? In other words, in order to get this trick to work wouldn't you need a mono signal going in?

First, you could just put them in the middle of the room so your bass responce sucks (the bass is what will piss off the neighbors). Then face to face with a mono signal and use white noise (all noise band). All you need to do is to get the fabric and polymers to loosen a little to break in the speakers. It's a mechanical thing (not electrical).

A mono switch would be great to have but, not really necessary.  Even using stereo music the loudness is effectively decreased by 50-70% as I remember it.   A great source for white noise is to use your tuner and simply "tune in" between stations!
