Can this machine "work" two channel information (CD for example) into ~5.1? There must be a chip or chip set that supports this feature.
The MAP-1 from McCormack sp? does this very well.

I'm confused a little here.  If you have 5.1 capability then you have either a Receiver or Pre-pro.  Most HT processors come with DPL2 and/or other such surround processing for 2-ch material; why would you want it in your DVD player also?   What the 5900 does have, which is alot more useful than surround processing for stereo (Yuck!) is an enhanced Bass mode, which allows your subwoofer to receive signal from your analog outputs for 2-ch.

Because I don't have or want a pre-pro. I'm considering a main system rebuild. To include a Pathos One integrated and maybe a souped up Jolida 3 channel integrated ergo there will be no pre-pro. Any DTS, DD, etc. will need to be done in the disk spinning machine.

Another route would be the McCormack 6 channel analog pre-amp. This option would not have a pre-pro either. I was able to listen to 2 into 5.1 from CD through a McCormack MAP-1 today------very cool.

I don't think there's a DVD player made with an onboard processor of that nature.  You best bet would be something like an MSB MDP-3X http://www.msbtech.com/msb_home.htm

Hi,
I'm not sure what the 5900 does with redbooks but I have a Panny rp82 which althogh it is dvd-a capable (i use a mltidisc for both dvd-a and sacd)I ise it strictly for video and regular cds which it upsamples to 88.2 which my Denon 5800/03 recognizes.

At that point I can stay in 2ch/pure direct/ or any dsp mode my processor provides.

The 5900 is an excellent machine but it's not a prepro although it might have some upsampling capabilities which would have to be read by a processor.
