Big Sunfire amp for woofers

I'm checking out a 625w/ch/8, 1350w/ch/4 ohm Sunfire Signature amp for use on the bass cabinets of my speakers and it sounds great. Certainly different from 100 tube watts that I had before.

So it gets you thinking, should I bother checking out other SS amps, or is the big Sunfire the real deal for 200 hz on down?

Maybe Carver is using some trickery to get such impressive specs and the real world performance might not live up?

Anyone live with a Signature for a while - How'd it do on the bass?

(1)  Find the message in your PM "Outbox" and copy the text (highlight the text, then right mouse click and select "Copy").

(2)  Return to this thread, click on the "Reply" button and paste the copied text into the text field (place the mouse in the same place you normally type your comments, right mouse click, then select "Paste" ).

(3) Submit.

Hello
I've been reading on this amp lately.
BigRedMachine just bought one to use on his speaters and
I think he is going tube on top.

Is your demo a Signiture series ll?
There is an early and late version of the Sig ll.
Called a 1st and 2nd generation.

Specifications  slew is at 15 - 18 ,  slower then many.
Damping is not noted, don't know why.
Classically the Eagle amps are known for the bass and many use these.
Rod

Thanks DU,

Works like magic to me!

I run the Sunfire II on my MartinLogan reQuests and the amp is for real. Mine only has 300 watts RMS per channel and it will make my hybrid woofers fess up. The success of the Sunfire was brought about because of a new discovery of running output trannies at a different voltage. It also has a smart power supply. Don't know what class it runs in though. It will run ice cold all day long.

Bob Carver has an interesting White Paper on Amps on his web site sunfire.com/technology.
This explains his down converting powersupply, etc.

I have a Sunfire Signature amp in my theater and it has gobs of power and has never missed a beat in the 5-6 years I've owned it. Very powerful and solid performance in the bass dept. I had it hooked up to Martin Logan Odysseys for a while and they can be VERY power hungry beasts and it handled them with ease, even at higher than "normal" levels.  :thumb:

A brief report on the Sunfire:

At first I didn't like it but I was also using the CDP as transport through the DAC, which you would think wouldn't matter, but now with the SB it is a ton of fun.

I've tried both the voltage only taps and then tried the voltage tap to woofers and current tap to the top end and it is smoother.

Either way bass is jumbo.  Big.  Large-Marge, if you will.  Room filling as well.

Piano sounds very good.  Soundstage is very nice as in deep and still as wide as before.  Voices are excellent.  This amp has more slam than the Pass but its gain is requiring me to turn the volume up to 3 instead of 12.

So far, so good.  I'm still kicking around some other potential amp auditions, but my initial reaction was to move this out fast but it's starting to grow on me now.
