AR turntable with Sumiko MMT arm
« on: 27 Jul 2008, 04:06 pm »
Are these decent turntables for a couple of hundred bucks, or are there better options for breaking into vinyl within a low budget?  I am trying to upgrade from the B&O that I have had for 30 years with out going whole hog.  It is basically a 50 year old design, so I have my doubts.

actually, it was manufactured in 1983, so it wasn't one of the early ones.  Is that good or bad?

Looks like the model is simply "The AR Turntable" and just preceeds the ES-1.   Is that good or bad?  I could use some advice here before jumping on this!!

well, i tried to win one on ebay. i think it was the same, a "the turntable" with a sumiko arm as well.
i think they look nice. i've read that they play nice as well but i haven't heard one.

funny thing is, i lost the auction to the guy that runs the site i linked you to earlier.
i think the winning price was $379...

from the same site.

"The "The AR Turntable" was favorably reviewed by Peter Mitchell in Audio magazine (1984), but he did complain that the vertical pivots were nearly a half-inch above the record surface, meaning that some warp wow may be audible when playing imperfectly flat records. However, the perfect match for that arm was the Shure V15, and the resonance with the damping brush down gave a 2dB rise in the 11-16Hz range, rolling off below 9Hz. Not bad - the damping factor of this particular combo. A few finishes were offered, mostly oiled walnut in the states and a deeper cherry finish in the UK. The edges of the AR TT are rounded, as is the ES-1, the EB-101 being a bit boxier looking and an inch smaller all around.

An earlier model of the AR TT would sometimes develop bearing noise after a while. The problem was strictly QC, and a new motor was introduced in 1985, with better bearing materials and finish. Most of the tonearms developed severe sticking problems. The cueing devise was redesigned and field replaced under warranty."

Much info on AR here:

I had a mint ES1 years back with a Rega RB300 Arm. It was a nice mellow, warm sounding table. I liked it!
Sold it for a VPI 19MK3, I now use a Basis 1400. All very different sounding tables for sure.I had a Merrill Heirloom at one time too and a P3.

I don't know how much it matters but the Sumiko is a heavy arm and me thinks the AR is lightly suspended.  I have to think that was taken into account it just struck me as an odd match.

AR was one of the first companies to produce a "high end" table for $63 dollars. I own 3 of them. They designed it to the simplest level, suspended platter, simple tone arm, and one switch to turn it on and off. The table you are talking about is the 20 year later model, which still had most of the technology involved, with a better tone arm. Of course, these tables have been modified with a host of different tonearms some for better and I suspect some for worse.

So the question remains, is this a good entry into vinyl for less than a couple of hundred bucks?  Are there better options?

I think it's a good start.
