Need help of treating my living room
« on: 22 Jul 2008, 12:34 am »
Hi,

I need help from all of experienced audiophiles and/or musiclovers for treating my living room that I think it will be a potential excellent listening room. I would appreciate your inputs, times and efforts. Here are the pictures of my living room:

I have tried to draw my living room with measurements but it seems like I am not so good at this. Therefore, these are the numbers

The length, depth and height of a back wall are 30'W x 15'Dx 15'H
The height of a wall behind of the speakers is 8.5'H
The space between two speakers is 6' and my sitting position is 8'

Many thanks,
Tan

Yes, that's a nice room, and plenty large enough to get great results. The rising ceiling is also good. The main needs, as always, are corner bass trapping and absorbing treatment at the reflection points. It looks like the side walls are not easy to treat, but the good news is the room is wide so those reflections are less damaging than in a narrow room. Though ideally you'd have absorber panels on stands at those places.

I see a lot of corners that will benefit from bass traps, so it really comes down to how much you're comfortable spending, and how much you're willing to look at. With bass traps, the more the better. Always.

Agreed.  Corners look tough at floor level though - at least in the 3 I can see.  Most likely it would be up high.  Another great place that's out of the way is where the rear wall meets the slanted ceiling.  You can straddle that entire 'edge' and get a good amount of bass control.

Thanks a lot for your opinion and suggestion. With your experiences what kind of bass traps and corners do you suggest (Real traps, 8th nerves, GIKs, etc...)? Would Michael Green Tune paks and floor standers work? I have planned to spend quite big money on room treatment but since I have a limited budget right now where should I start first (behind speakers, corners or standers to the side of the room)?

Many thanks,
Tan

I'm not a fan of the Michael Green.

Ours (obviously) and Ethan's Real Traps are going to do the best job for you when it comes to broadband bass control.  The 8th Nerve will fit in some of the smaller corners that you have that won't support full size broadband absorbers.

Behind your speakers will help some due to close proximity to the wall in dealing with SBIR issues.  After that, I'd work on the corners with some full size panels.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. Yes, it is true that big rear wall behind my listening position is a problem of echo and bouncing sounds when entering from the main door. So do you suggest to cover the long corner between the slanted ceiling and rear wall. I also hear a lot of booming bass behind the speakers even though I had two ASC bass traps.

The ASC's are in the right place but just not big enough to get down low in the deeper bass.

The rear wall can be a problem for sure.  The upper corner I was suggesting is general broadband control only which will extend into the deep bass if the corner is straddled.

Tan,

Just a suggestion, but you might want to contact both Bryan AND Ethan.  Or perhaps you could check out the websites noted at the bottom of their posts.  They're friendly and very helpful competitors and each has a great website (actually Bryan links you to the GIK Acoustics website -- he's a dealer for them).

Nice looking room you have there.

Thanks Dave. I have contacted both Bryan and Ethan. It sounds like I have to spend more than I expected. Let see what it will be.

I might suggest starting with heavy lined drapes on the windows on either side of the speakers. They will work wonders for slap echo.

DR,

Thanks for your advice. I have wooden shutters on the windows but only at night my musics sound less echos.

Tan

Tan,

I have 3 GIK 242 panels that you can borrow for a few days to try out.  If you have some time on Saturday or Sunday, I can bring over the panels and my laptop with room eq wizard and we can experiment.

Hi Russ,

Thank you very much for your offer. That is an excellent idea. Yes, you are welcome to come to my house this Sunday if you have time (maybe around afternoon).

Many thanks,
Tan
