Relationship between the AVA product lines
« on: 18 Jul 2008, 03:36 pm »
I am looking for some clarification on the product lines AVA is or will be offering. As I consider the various pre, amp, and DAC products listed on the website, there are the "Ultra" and "Omegastar" lines, and coming online there is the "Differential" and "Insight" lines.

How should a potential customer consider these various lines in relation to one another?

For one thing the OmegaStar line is discontinued, having been replaced by the new Insight (solid state) design.

For another, I believe Frank said he would only be offering the Differential components in solid state design, as the hybrid (Ultra) design was cost prohibitive.

So (if I may) that leaves Insight (SS), Differential Insight (SS), Transcendence (tube), and Ultra (hybrid).  As for how they relate....

Thank you, that is helpful. This begs the question of how they relate cost/performance-wise.

My question is, when will the Differential Preamp/Dac combo be available?

It is still being worked on, needs some panel changes, also.

The differential equipment will come after all the new boards are done for the Insight line (two down, three to go at this time).  In addition the differential line was planning on using a new Wolfson super high perfomance digital chip set.  However, no sooner than we get a new digital board designed for that chip set then Wolfson announces an even more super performance digital chip set.  We have sampled the newest chip set and compared it to the planned earlier Wolfson chip set, and at this point in time, it seems to leave something to be desired.  It may be the implementation from the source using the chip in some very interesting designs (TwistedPear) on it may be that Wolfson has gone overboard in making the newest and greatest chip "sound like analog" and dropped the ball somewhere.  We are waiting for feedback from the designers regarding this.  The differential equipment cannot be done until the DAC chip is nailed down, it takes that design, with differential output capability that the Philips chip set lacks to set the wheels in motion on a differential DAC or DAC/preamp.

In the meantime, the Insight equipment is shipping now.  You have never heard solid state like this before.

Regards,

Frank Van Alstine

Any way to say what's different about the Insight design compared to the OmegaStar without giving away any secrets?  I.e. what got changed not how exactly it got changed.  Did I miss it somewhere?

Frank,

So am I to understand that there will be no T8 or Ultra series differential equipment?
