Epos ES 14's Back in da House !!
« on: 12 Jul 2008, 12:53 pm »
I just had my mothballed Epos ES 14's fixed by Bill Legall at Miller Sound Speaker Repair and wow, they sound great.

Been a long time since I played with them, they where my first"real" speaker, I had them forever.\

I was thinking of selling them so I got them fixed, decided to plug em in and No they are staying!

Man, on the floor, not setup, they just fill the room with great sound. To be honest I don't think I ever fed these speakers with the level of quality I know have , but they love it

Maybe I will break them out at the next rave

Mike,
I would say they are from the early 90's, no crossover really just a cap on the woofer I think, but they still like power. And yes they are damn fine speakers, I had the little ES 11's as well but sold them to a neighbor and my brother has the 3 way floorstander ES 25's.

Chris the copper ribbon is Nordost flatlines  biwired, nothing special , but in some cases they work well.

I owned 2 pairs of Epos ES11s in Walnut.  One was a closeout sale pair from AudioAdvisor back in 1996, when I was at University of Kansas for graduate school.  Later, after having returned home, I sold them via Audiogon in 1999.

As fate had it, I bought another pair of the ES11s, in Walnut again to run with some integrateds I had at the time, pairing extremely well with the Audio Refinement Complete (remember the hype?) and later, a 47 Labs Shigaraki integrated, which was a combo made in heaven!, and later I even ran them with my Final Laboratories Music 5 battery amplifier (10 watts of op chip power powered via 36 D batteries from the $1 store) and I heard heaven.

I must have been stupid enough to sell them again, with multiple buyers lined up.  I sold it with a profit, but I have always been enamored with the entire Epos presentation, incredibly clear, yet not harsh, extremely taut bass.  The definition of PRAT.

If I ever had the chance again, I would never have sold my original pair and would have paired it with something like the 47 Labs gaincard.  With that, I would never have search far and wide squandering my money in less than satisfactory speakers.

Topround, I would keep your speakers forever.  These speakers, especially those made in the UK are going the way of vintage Rogers BBC monitors. :thumb:

Bemopti,
I probably wouldn't sell them, they were my first real speaker, just like my systemdek TT was my first real TT, they have sentimental value, but I do know where my ES 11's are, and I could probably get them back. They were in Walnut as well and had the metal grills that I ordered from England that look great with them, they were great as well.

And Frank, watch those meds!

And I do listen to music, but we are on Audio Circle, a website devoted to the talk of things audio, I really don't talk about music, I just enjoy it :thumb:

I guess good components or in this case speakers are simply unforgettable, like a first love.  Dang, there is only one FIRST, and afterward, everything else is just an attempt to recover what cannot be.  Ouch. :green:

But I was young, they were my first pair, I worked hard them and I enjoyed them a lot :D

Yeah, still that's something you don't forget. :D

If I can recall from a picture of your audio ghost past, ehm, ehm, did you have a pair of late 1980s, Advents?

My first speakers EVER were a pair of speakers that came with my Midi system from Sony, circa 1985.  They had square woofers whose surround disintegrated with time.  By God they were terrible, but how you said, with the naivete of youth, even the worst memories are actually better than what they are.

Trying to comprehend our youth is a fruitless exercise, nevertheless there are lessons to be learned, especially in the case of emotional involvement with the music that had nothing to do with $$$ equipment.

My first experience to radio or any sort of fi.... consisted of something like this...

through a pair of these sort of headphones....

I remember my stepsister listening to American disco tunes, the Eagles, Doobie Brothers etc.... as well as Brazilian late 1960s and 1970s pop/rock through the radio.

Topround,

Thanks for this thread. My first set of real speakers were a set of Totem Acoustic 'Sttaf's' that I purchased back in 2003. I still remember the day I got them quite vividly, and have enjoyed their sound ever since. Sometimes I have flirted with the idea of passing the buck, but threads like these remind me that it will be worth hanging onto them no matter where my audio journey takes me. The draw of sentimental value is certainly powerful, but its even harder to resist when the product kicks-butt. :)

Enjoy those Epos! My ears have never had the pleasure of spending good quality time with their product line.
