I currently have a U70 and am thinking about a pair of Kef Ref 201/2. The thing about the KEfs is that they are set up for tri-amping or tri-wiring. I am thinking that the u70 might be a little underpowered for them? I will be running the Kefs with a pair of subs. What would be the best way to set up the amplification? I am thinking about picking up another u70 and then run in a vertical bi-amp set up with one channel for the bass and one for the uni-q driver.

I love my u70 and wouldn't want to get rid of it but perhaps sell it and go with a more powerful solid state amp in a standard, though tri-wired configuration?

Or would there be another AVA amp with the same sensitivity and then I could run the uni-q drivers with the u70 and a solid state amp for the bass driver?

Oh well, just a thought on this rainy day. any input appreciated!

I've never tried bi-amp or tri-amp, I think it's a waste of money and the trade off isn't all that great.

I would just enjoy your U70 in the standard stereo configuration with a set of good speakers.

If you are thinking of the KEF speakers, then you should read the Exodus Audio "Kepler" review in Soundstage! as there are some comparisons and commentary especially concerning moderately powered tube amps with both these speakers. It's a real eye opener.

HI Terry,

Are you suggesting that I quit my quest for Kef 102/2 or that perhaps the U70 is not going to match up well?



I still have my pair of Dynaudio Gemini's that I built back in 1992 that are very fine speakers, and responded quite well to bi-amping.

My admittedly low ball offer seems to have been refused so it is all a moot point and saves me the trouble of changing out amps and speakers. The U70 is a wonderful amplifier and is a terrific match for my Infinity Intermezzo 4.1s. Guess I will keep them.



And as for the other nice fellow who has posted, I don't know why, if you have never tried it and  have no experience with it you can still have the opinion that bi-amping gives no meaningful improvement and is not worth it. Thanks for that.



BTW, that thing about speaker wire, I don't know, can't explain it have no interest in spending big bucks for speaker wire but definitely hear some nice things from reasonably priced speaker cables vs. zip cord. But I do have experience with them, the U70 and my Infinities.

Bottom line then is that the U70 is good enough to be factored into speaker choices, everything works together.
