Anyone listening to vinyl with electrostatic speakers?

As one more of my long weekend projects, I made room for one of my tables (VPI) in my main listening room, when my MartinLogan reQuests are. I had to take out my VCR and my mini-disc recorder which I just never did use that much. Sorry to see them out but that's the way things go.

With the VPI on the top roost of my Sanus rack, I fired up some newly remastered Depesche Mode (Exciter) and OH MY GOD, does vinyl ever sound good on ESL's. I's wondering how many vinyl heads use these speakers in their systems.

I'm using the Innersound Eros in the front room right now and am spinning some 'Oregon' right now.  Great to have another stat-head out there.  :thumb:

I went with a friend to buy a turntable from a guy who had Sound Lab electrostatic speakers.  My friend Barry wrote about the trip below.

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=57288.msg507051#msg507051

My impressions of them were similar to Barry's.  I thought that there was more magic with Barry's or my Salks with vinyl. Although the Sound Lab's could play loud, I thought the dynamic range of them was reduced.  The Sound Lab's seemed to lack the impact of the Salks.  They seemed to smooth out the sound.

Martin Logan Spires (w/Descent i sub) along with a Raven Two...

One SME iV.Vi arm has a Dynavector XV-1s and the other iV.Vi
has the Lyra Olympos...

Only have the Olympos for a couple of weeks for review.
Really magic though!

I almost hate to mention this, but I'm using my Yamamoto A-9 300B amp to drive the Innersound stat panels.  ScottF was over at the house and we decided to see how that would sound........  The Eros panels are about 95 dB efficient, so that's what makes this combo possible.  SCompRacer- good to see another Eros owner around here.  I'll pm you about the rest of my system.

Tonepub- you're killing us.  First the Dynavector XV-1s then a Lyra Olympos....I'm thinking those would sound good over my TV's built-in speakers.   :thumb:

Hey Wayner,

I think you'll find a happy bunch of Vinyl / Logan-ites over at the MartinLogan Club, including Dave (twich54)

Thanks Tom,

I am a member over there too, but I seldom post. It's too mushy (like a bunch of Harley guys all pissin' all over each other about their Harleys). They're a good bunch but I like the AudioCircles much better.

That brings back memories........... Not too long ago, in my previous life, I listened exclusively to my VPI/Souther/Dynavector rig through my beloved Sound Labs. That was IT for me man. King of the road. I never really messed with my vinyl rig but I went from dynastats, to the A4s, and then finally to the Aura. In hind sight, I should have just kept the dynastats and upgraded my table and arm. And amplifier!

I never could find the right amplifier for the Aura. That is the one true weekness of a full range electrostat, finding a good sounding amplifier. I guess that's why I was so easily swept off of my feet by the sound of single ended triode amps and efficient two way speakers.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane  :D .

That Yamamoto is a VERY special little amp.  Marc Phillips used to
have one and it really had a super musical sound.  Much different
than a 300B or 2A3 amp!

But I have to say that I've really found bliss with the ML's and the
CJ Premier 350.  It has all the dynamics and nuance I could ever
want....

However, if I ever get a spare room for another SET system,
that Yamamoto would be at the top of my list. Really nice looking
amp too!

Over the past 25+ years, I've had many stats, and always had a vinyl front end to go with them.  Vinyl, tubes and stats.     One of my favorite sounds ever was an Linn/ARC/ML CLS IIz system years ago.

I've since gone over to the dark side and use Sonicweld's as my main reference speakers, but I keep a pair of Acoustat's around for old times sake.

Peace,

Lee

I loved my Acoustats too...

Had 2's, 3's 2+2's, 1+1's...
The 1+1s with an ARC D-79 was quite a nice combination.
That amp worked well with my CLS's too.

Plenty of combinations that work!

My favorite was a pair of Martin Logan CLS's, ET II, SOTA Saphire, Miyabi, AR SP9 and Conrad Johnson amps.  Sweet, sweet...

I still have all of my RCA's and Mercuries.

1st post, yippee.

Use Oracle MKI, Jelco arm, Koetsu Onyx with Innersound EROS MKIII, Aesthetix Janus and Innersound ESL300.

Works good.

Me too.  I've lived with Quad USA monitors driven by ARC tubes for over 10 years with vinyl as my primary source.  IMO, digital still has a long way to go to catch analogue's naturalness.  That said, in today's world you need both since there's a ton of stuff that has never been issued on CD and you need CD for the newly released recordings.
