Hello all:

I am thinking about replacing my Monster 3500 power boxes (7+ yrs. old and one of them is starting to fail).  Does anyone have experience with the APS Pure Power conditioners.

Any other positive experiences with similar products?  Recommendations? :thumb:  Warnings? :nono:

Best regards,

Dave

I had the 1050 and really didn't like it.  It was noisy to begin with on its own: a high pitched electrical whine.  I didn't feel it actually helped the sound and it certainly couldn't support an amp.  So I ended up with only front end components into it and the amp went straight into the wall.  If the amp was plugged into it the sound was constrained.

The only thing neat about it was the battery back up which really works as advertised.

Some folks here like the Running Springs stuff but I didn't find where it did much of anything and maybe that's a good thing.  But I was unimpressed.  So now I use the Audience products and am impressed.

I have an APS 1050 or more accurately I had one.

It's a great re-generator if you got dirty power or have systematic voltage fluctuations from densely populated (sub)urban location.  I see incoming voltage sag at different times of the day where I live.  Of course, the output from my APS unit is always 120V.  :thumb:  It did not choke my large tube monoblocks and held rock steady bias on them.  It was also good with my TT motor to maintain accurate speed.  The digital transport and DAC also benefited with quieter background and more resolution.  All good things.

Now the bad parts:  It has a fan and it makes noise.  I cannot hear it from my listening position when any music is playing but I can just hear it when nothing is played.  It's very faint and this doesn't bother me as I have more things going on around that's making bigger noise usually.  Now the part that bothers me -- it died on me twice.  :duh: Both times, APS sent RMA and shipping label to return the product at no cost to me. :thumb: It turns out the surge at start-up was too much with my amps.  The unit was running at 70% capacity at normal condition with the amps on -- so the start-up tube rush was pushing the limit.  What with a new sales office being established in the states but repairs still being done in Ontario, it took considerable processing time for these repair/replacements to be made.  With the 2 year warranty period coming up I voiced a concern.  This is the point when the folks at APS determined that I would risk the same overload situation with a new unit.  So, I was asked to wait.   :o  Wait for a new product that is in production. Due to all the down times I had, they are going to send me a new APS Pure Power 2000 unit at no additional charge.  With the the bigger capacity, I shouldn't have any issues with the start ups even with my behemoth amps.  It should be shipping soon.  :thumb:

IMO, it's a great product if you live with unstable power.  You just have to assess your power needs and get the capacity that you need.    The battery back up is really handy with summer storms and power outages.  I am looking forward to getting my 20 amp unit.

Interesting!

One :thumb: and one  :finger:.

Since the power conditioner is going to be enclosed in a piece of furniture (with venting) the fan is a positive in my case.  I probably will not be able to hear the fan, and the battery backup was one of the things I was looking for, so I ordered the 1050.

According to UPS I should have it today.

If I can hear a difference (should have a "smiley" for wooden ears ) I will post something.

Thanks to you both for taking the time to respond.

I have an APS 1050 for 3 yrs. now and thankfully never had a problem with it. Where I live there are brownouts during summertime and the unit switches from AC to DC seamlessly.

Woodsyi comments good & bad mirror mine exactly. There is some fan noise, but from the listening position it is very faint with no music playing and is not distracting.

I had no loss in dynamics with my Spectron Musician III SE only problem was at turn on the APS would overload for a couple seconds then recover. I now use an Audience aR1p for my amp ,because when I upgraded to the SE the amp's transformer would make a slight buzzing sound plugged into the APS.

Use it for all my other components. It is cool to unplug the unit and run on DC, it last about an hour using the batteries. Leaving it plugged in sounds the same ,which means it is doing its job ( goes from AC to DC and back to AC leaving stable clean power) very satisfied with its performance.
