What's the latest equipment you've borrowed?
« on: 21 Jun 2008, 02:28 am »
It might be fun to see what gear people are borrowing and why. A place for quick impressions of stuff on loan. How did it integrate into the system etc. Other's can chime in with advice and opinions.

Maybe this thread will gain traction, maybe not.

I'll start, even though I'm not exactly sure what it is:

Sunfire Signature 2 channel amp, not a Series II, I'm pretty sure it's an original 625 watt/8 ohm, 1300 into 4!

At first I ran her full range for a bit, but then couldn't resist trying my VAC amp on the mid/tweets and the Sunfire on the woofers which are crossed over at 200 hz.

The sensitivities don't match perfectly on paper, but everything I put on I conciously ask myself "Too much bass? Too much treble?" but so far the balance seems really good.

1000+ SS watts on the woofers is quite a bit different from 100 tube watts. The mids on up improved noticably now that the VAC has so little work to do. If I stick w/ an arrangement like this, I can send the VAC back to Kevin and get it wired for triode, something like 35 watts which will be plenty.

Lo and behold, I'm listening quite a bit louder than I used to with no sense of strain relative to the tubes alone, wonder why?

It's interesting to listen to the woofer cabinets only - It sounds mushier than you might think, and then when the mid/tweet cabinets get fired up everything seems to get tight like it's supposed to - Neat effect.

Not sure what $ my Bro wants for it, but it might have to stay even though there's no room in the rack.

Have any equipment make a temporary visit to your room lately?

I've had Rim's (woodsyi) Wavelength Duetto for some time now.  It is of course a 300b amp and its the first time I've run the Omega Compact Hemps with a DHT amp.  My present preamp, an Eastern Electric Minimax has way too much gain for it, so things get way too loud way too quickly, not allowing much room for volume adjustment.  The WE 300b's have a tonal quality that is noticeably different than the Music Reference EM7 amp that had been there.  There is more emphasis on the the lower mids and and upper bass.  Just a good bit more presence.  A very masculine amp in my view.
I had picked up the Glow Audio Amp One, a single ended pentode (EL84) integrated amp, the cost was very reasonable and it works very nicely with the Hemps.  Again a different sound, much more spice on top and dead quiet in comparison.  I had intended to upgrade to Louis' Alnico hemp drivers but the Glow sounds so good with its 5 watts on the second generation Hemps and the Alnicos are said to be less efficient so that is how things are at present.
I'm also taking a prep class for a Cisco cert, the CCNA to enhance my marketability (corporate politics cost me my job) and a bit of music really works wonders after the reading and studying (and worrying.)

Chris is like a library of Audio Equipment. Im afraid he will soon have to start using the Dewey Decimal System. Yes you heard that right.  Amongst my Librarian thugs we call it the DDS to give it that ultra cool factor.

My neighbor picked up a Pinnacle Digital Sub 150 at a thrift store for $35.

I have it as a semi-permanent loan until he gets his system together and only use it for movies, it adds a nice bumpity bump.
I would say it sounds the same as a Dayton Sub.

Last year I borrowed a pair of Wilson Duette active bookshelf speakers. Let's just say I have a friend who sells them. They are VERY nice.
