Firefox Add Ons

With the release of Firefox 3 (http://www.getfirefox.com) it seems a good time to list your favorite and perhaps necessary add ons.

For me there are a few that I have to have.

1) FoxMarks - bookmark synchronizer. It's free and works great. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2410

2) Flashblock - blocks flash content unless you explicitly allow it. Really useful on sites that just pound you with advertising. Can speed things up considerably since there are not 1/2 dozen animated things running that you probably don't want to see. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

3) IT Tab - allows you to use an Internet Explorer instance in a Firefox tab. Useful for web sites that are poorly written and only work right with IE. I believe this only works in Windows. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

Since I pretend to be a developer these are very useful as well.

Firebug - "You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page...", truly a very cool tool. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843

Web Developer - Lots of very handy stuff if you are developing. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60

The next ones fall into the very cool but don't use a lot category

DownThemAll - bulk downloader that integrates very well with Firefox. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201

Fireftp - a fairly full featured ftp client that lives in Firefox. I tend to use FileZilla most of the time but this is nice to have on my USB version. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/684

List your favorites or must haves.

I didn't lose any of my prior settings or bookmarks.  However I did have one Add On that did not work.

All settings and bookmarks remain and are not changed when upgrading from v.2 to v.3, though some add-ons will be disabled until they are updated to work on v.3.

I use:
  • Adblock Plus
  • Yahoo Toolbar

I use Adblock because I hate ads and I use the Yahoo toolbar so I have one central place to store all my bookmarks. There are other bookmark synchronizers, etc. but I use Yahoo for my email, so their toolbar works well for me.

No mention of "ReloadEvery"??!! :duh:

It's priceless!  How else does one auto-refresh AC and other sites at any given refresh time period??  If you have a better alternative, please share!

The single and more dominant reason why I use firefox is Scrollbar Anywhere.

I can't browse webpages without the convenience of Scrollbar Anywhere.

I just discovered Piclens that WGH mentioned earlier, nice add on for browsing pics, video clips and news across various online sources. Love the 3D interface.

If anyone has other apps like this for explorer or for browsing your hard drive photos, drop me a PM.
Or anything else cool like this let me know.

Thanks

Here are a couple more useful plug-ins:

Stealther 1.0.6
If there are times you want to surf the web without leaving a trace in your local computer, then this is the right extension for you. What it does is temporarily disable the following:
- Browsing History (also in Address bar)
- Cookies
- Downloaded Files History
- Disk Cache
- Saved Form Information
- Sending of ReferrerHeader
- Recently Closed Tabs list

And if you surf the web at your office:

Panic 0.3.3
Do you find yourself often browsing websites while you should be doing work?
Are you afraid that one of these days your boss is going to catch you?
If so this extension is for you. It is called the Panic extension because it will save your butt just in case the boss sneaks up on you. In just a click this extension will close all your open tabs and replace it with a new page that you chose.
