The new Phenomena II is supposed to be awesome. The old one had more than enough gain and loading settings to get extremely good sound out of just about any cartridge. The new one has them on the back of the unit instead of inside. If you get really into vinyl, you're going to want this tweakability eventually and you will get the itch to upgrade from something like the Cambridge. This is the price-range you'll be looking at (at least) to get something with all the settings.
On the downside... it's a brand new model and getting a sweet deal would be difficult. The last of the old models were going for around $400.00. All gone now I think...
