Niece don't want to leave the sweet spot
« on: 16 Jun 2008, 01:40 pm »
My brother stopped over with my 15 year old niece Molly who plays in the school band and sings a little in School. She was up for the weekend as she lives with her Mother about 100 miles away. I asked her if she wanted to hear the new speakers I had built (Selah audio RG-5G's). I grabbed Fiona Apple's Tidal CD track 4 Criminal and hit play. About 30 seconds into the song she looks over at me and says "You should build and sell these"  I guess Rick must be do something right. When that's over Amy Winehouse Back to Black, You Know I'm no good goes go's into to the CD player in which she likes a lot. My niece tells me they want her to sing with the Jazz band in school which i think is pretty cool so i ask her if she wants to hear a good Jazz singer. With that I Put Casandra Wilson's New Moon Daughter's - Strange Fruit in. The look on her face was worth price of my whole  system. Doe in the headlights mouth hanging open. She was just mesmerised by Casandra. She listened to 3 more tracks before my brother told her that is was time for them to go but she got him to hang around for another two before she get out of the sweet spot. I pretty sure Molly will be back as soon as she get a chance to hear some more

"Strange Fruit' does it every time!  Probably my leading favorite demo track...because it's wonderful music too!  New moon Daughter was once in line for SACD treatment (wow) but fell by the wayside somehow.

Nice story. Maybe there's hope for the iPod generation after all.

I wish I could get anyone, including my wife, to sit down and really listen. It seems most people think of music as background sound and not something to be focused on. It's a shame, because as we know it can be an emotional and involving experience.
