Impedance matching
« on: 14 Jun 2008, 10:31 pm »
After reading thru some of the Audio Basics, I noticed that few manufacturers make issue with their products drive capability. What is the ideal ratio? For example, my preamp has an output impedance of 200 ohms and it drives a tape deck and a crossover that are 20k ohms each. This makes for a ratio of 1:100. Is this adequate? Or should the ration be higher?

I think the general rule is a 10:1 ratio as a minimum.  It would generally be the output impedances of the source components (lower would be better) and the input impedance of the preamp (higher is better).  The same thing would apply between the preamp (output impedance) and the amp (input impedance).
As you get closer to the 10:1 ratio, the capacitance of the interconnects begin to play a role in the sound.  The capacitance in the interconnects would begin to roll off the high frequencies.

Cheers,
Tom
