What space plan drafting software to use?
« on: 13 Jun 2008, 08:28 pm »
Hello Acoustic Circle forum,

I'm planning to finally tackle & treat my multi-purpose listening room..  I've experimented with some panels and misc. corner treatments but would like to really dial it in correctly once and for all.  Many issues with view windows, hard surfaces, etc.

I have a 50% scale blue print of my original house plan and have also drawn some space plans to scale on engineering paper.  By the time I scan and post them, I imagine they wouldn't be that legible.  In following the various threads I've notice some really nice looking digital image space plans.  Is there a preferred software modeling program to use?

Thanks,
Kenreau

A lot of people use Google Sketchup which is free. But don't post the native files. Export a standard GIF or JPG or PNG so anyone can view the drawings.

If you want just a quick easy 2D, you can use MS Visio and export to .jpg or .gif.  If you already have your plans in .dxf, it will also import some of the .dxf flavors.

Yeah, I use Visio. It's great! Not as pretty as Sketchup, but very precise and with a lot of great features.

After nearly 40 years of dealing with construction, drafting, and reading drawings the CAD stuff (especially in the hands of amateurs) scares me.  It's the old adage of needing a computer to really screw things up.  I've seen too many CAD generated "pretty pictures" that are garbage (full of mistakes).  CAD can make anyone "look" like a pro but have tons of built in errors.

For a single room, CAD of any kind is overkill.  1/4 inch grid paper, pencil, and eraser is all you need.  Anything more and you're playing with your computer and with fire.
