Multi-Channel USB DAC advice?
« on: 12 Jun 2008, 09:38 pm »
Anyone have any recommendations for a multi-channel USB DAC?

I have Foobar outputting 4-channels (software crossover) into 2 amps then to fullrange and bass speakers.

At the moment this works through a modded X-FI soundcard, but I'm planning to buy a laptop.

Most of the good stuff seems to be 2-channel, so far I've come up with the following:

m-audio audiophile or transit pro
esi maya44 / ex5 /ex7
x-fi surround 5.1

I don't want to spend too much but I'm quite happy with a soldering iron if that helps.

Cheers T

Turtle Beach has something akin to the Transit, for lots less (dunno sound quality)

also, a full multichannel (likewise pretty reasonable price). I haven't heard either, but Turtle Beach sound cards are pretty well regarded.

Thanks SJD! Just had a quick look at the TB, price is certainly cheap but the specs on paper look a bit rough. I did however find a nice list of cards (int & ext) that's given me something to mull over. I'm leaning towards an ebay pro interface at the moment.
