AV-3 Questions
« on: 11 Jun 2008, 11:35 am »
Hello,
I just purchased the AV-3 parts kit from Danny and plan to start building the enclosures this weekend. The speakers will be located about 18 inches out from the back wall and approximately 3 feet from the side walls. My first question regards the best location for the TL terminus. Since the speakers will be only 18 inches from the rear wall, will the standard rear location of the terminus be o.k. or would it be better to locate it in the front ? My next question regards damping material. Has anyone who has built the AV-3's experimented with using bonded Dacron,Acousti-Stuf,or long fiber wool in lieu of Dacron poly fill?

Mine are about the same distance as you describe from back and side walls, they sound glorious!  If I remember well I think Danny had told me less the a feet from the back wall would definitely be problematic but over a feet is fine depending on your room.

I used Danny's best damping material, since it's a TL speaker I figured it was not worth it to try to save just a few dollars on damping.

I'd say that with that distance from the wall you are still fine with the TL exiting in the rear. If you got much closer than that then I'd consider letting it exit out the front.

You can experiment with any loose fill material behind the drivers but I'd stick with No Rez or a DIY equivalent on the inner walls including down through the TL.

Thanks Loftprojection and Danny for your replies regarding my questions about the TL terminus location and damping material for the AV-3. To Loftprojection - How did you finish your AV-3's? I plan to finish mine in either natural cherry or red oak. Do you have a picture of your completed speakers that you can post?

Thanks Again.

(Hopefully this works)

Here are a few Pix of my completed AV3's.

I'm posting because I sympathize with you and WISH that I could have reviewed a few different designs BEFORE starting work.

I'm very happy with the final look and sound of these Speakers.

Here are some picks of steps when I built mine.  There are a few pics on the second page with the finished job!

Loftprojection - Thanks for posting the construction pix's. I have several questions to ask if you don't mind which are as follows:

1. Did you use a router with a circle cutting jig or a saber saw to cut the half circles in the upper braces?

2. The base appears to be thicker than 1 inch. What thickness did you make it and is it solid wood or MFD? Also, what is the width and depth of the base?

3. What veneer did you use?

BTW - Your other speakers look very nice too.

Crossover fabrication question---

Why use wire that is heavier than the leads for the capacitors and resistors?

Great cabinetry.

If it were less than the gauge of wire used in the rest of the network then it would add resistance.

Hey Ron, my base are two pieces of 3/4" MDF covered with veneer.  Their about 1.5" larger/longer then the cabinet.  The veneer is cheap pine, it looks good but it is very fragile.  At my local hardware store they had pine, maple and oak for about the same price but I thought the pine looked best, after the fact though, I think I would use oak or maple next time, probably a bit less dangerous to scratch or nick the veneer.  The half circles were done with a regular jigsaw then rounded with a router bit.  Hope this helps.
