Stupidly, I managed to erase my itunes library in error, but had it backed up on external hard drive, thankfully.
When I reimported all the music, I lost playlists, which was no big deal, but also all the star ratings for individual tracks.

Does anyone know either how to retrieve these from the external hard drive back up or, failing that, from my ipod?

It would be a pain to have to rerate the entire library if I could retrieve the data a simpler way.

The Rating and Album Rating info is stored in the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file. You have to restore the deleted files (music) as well as this xml file via your backup application to the original folder(s), and not via 'Add to Library....' or 'Import' in iTunes. If you didn't backup the xml file, it's a moot point.
