Musical Fidelity X-Can v8 Headphone Amplifier
« on: 29 May 2008, 02:09 am »
I picked one of these up the other day because I was fiending for a head-amp lately. I've used most of the MF headphone amp series over the years, starting with the soda can on up thru the current model.

The headphone junkie in me started with the fact that most of my listening ended up being late at night. Insomnia :) I can't really jam with the wife sleeping upstairs and getting up @ 5am...so needless to say, that's when it began. Grado, Meire, ASL, EAR and Headroom have all been thru the doors but I still end up coming back to the MF.

It's a nice piece with the expected tube smoothness. The new version is twice as big as the v3 and the volume knob change, dual ports and USB option are very nice changes....but a remote control would be even cooler. Yes, I'm lazy.

The Sennheiser 580's I have serve me well and while usually laid back in comparison to their Grado counterparts....kinda perked up with the new amp, over my v3 version. Why? I have no idea and who cares in the end. I'm real happy and in headphone nirvana again.

I'm with you on the insomnia, :(  most of my listening is late at night for this reason as well.

I've seen the new one, but haven't had a chance to hear it yet.  Thanks!   :thumb:

The 580's are a great can, they use the same drivers as the 600's.

Sweet Avatar.

Thanks Lee :)

I think what sold me on Sennheiser is the fact that I've woken up downstairs, wife tapping me on the shoulder, so many times....they must be right. Grado has claimed pieces of my earlobe over the years, and I like to chill out. I had a pair of AKG 701 that were really nice but I felt like a professional wearing them....I'm just a grunt ;)

You know...I have been looking for a head amp that has a remote as well.  Hard to find.

I bought a V3 after switching from Grado SR-60s to Senn HD-600s. I then added some Black Gates in the output stage, tried rolling the tubes and upgraded the cable on the Senns with Cardas. While I'm relatively happy with the sound I find that it somehow could be more involving.
Strangely enough ever since I switched from my el-cheapo Grados to the Senns I seem to find myself nodding off in the middle of movies more than I used to. I wonder if the Senns have something to do with it or maybe I'm just getting older and need to nap more often. Or maybe it's just that movies aren't as good as they used to be.

Your best bet would be to get a remote controlled pre-amp with headphone out ...

Yeah, I've thought of that.  I really like to mess around with the small headphone niche manufacturers goods though, it's a lot more fun for me.

I think Woo Audio has a remote controlled head amp.  I'm going to check it out if they do.

I'm going with the movie thing.  Couldn't be that I have reached the stage of my life where I need naps again...  Nah!

This Yamaha integrated has a built in headphone amp with trim control. From what I hear it's pretty impressive(for a Yamaha)

Saisunil - I've had a couple tube pre-amps with dedicated headphone outputs. The Anthem Pre-2L has a decent output, the Melos SHA is outstanding but the Cary SLP-2002 I had was horrible. As far as dedicated, Consonance stands out to me.
I think it's a missing link for alot of gear these days and more about HDMI or whatever flavor is being marketed. I love to headphone and maybe the Dolby Headphone codec will bring some life back to some manufacturers....but I won't hold my breath. You can't find a piece of vintage gear withut headphone outputs....I'm being generic, but seriously, look at that single change over the years.

Turnandcough - I think it's the movies these days....certainly not you :) I also went with an upgrade on the cable for the Sennheisers. They're still laid back compared to a pair of Grados but that's fine by me since that's what I like anyways.

Cryoparts - I'll pass on the Woo but they're out there for sure. The headphone stands are a nice touch....ppl like that stuff. I just hang mine on the rack. Sugden makes some crazy gear as well as Headroom. I dig the portable units, that's interesting.
