Snap/pop when DAC loses signal...
« on: 24 Oct 2003, 06:36 pm »
Current transport is a stock Sony DVP-S7000 and I'm auditioning 2 new DACS. When I open the transport door and the DACS lose the digital signal I get a loud snap through the speakers almost like a serious static charge. Not nearly as loud when I cue up a new disc to listen to but its there. Both trial DACS are manufactured by the same people but are slightly different versions. Will try again tonight using my 555ES to see if its the transport but I doubt it as my Channel DAC is quiet when introducing a new disc.

All opnions are greatly appreciated!

that dvp is a dvd player, no?  i've heard of others w/this problem (w/the art di/o dac), when using dvd players.  no such issues w/cdp's...

I would think it's DAC related.  I have a DVP-S7700 as a transport and have had no problems with my Nixon Tubedac, however, when I had the ART DI/O Mensa in house it would lose signal regularly when changing discs.  I didn't get any loud noises though.

my DVP- 7700 syncs well with the Channel Islands, but needed to be reset with the art di/o.  I think it is a function of the multiplayer approach as opposed to stand alone redbook, which works fine with the art or Mensa

I have seen this many times and it's almost certainly the transport ,although it is possible to design DACs that won't do this, but in either case it's not really a fault.  When a CD is not playing there is no data on the S/PDIF output, however, most CD players will put out a "phatom" signal to stop the DAC going to sleep, idle ticking etc. DVD players (at least the one I have) won't necessarily do this until a disc is in and it has loaded the CD-playing software. I do not know if this is the case in general, however, I had a DAT which also went "silent" when not playing.

Clicking in DAC circuits can arise from almost any point in the chain, but certainly happens when signal is lost at the input, interpolation filter or output. The DAC can be made to mute when synch is lost, but in many cases it can be hard to make the mute engage quickly enough to prevent any noise when such a loss is abrupt or unexpected.
