I have Quad 12L active monitors sitting on Plateau stands filled with sand. Stands are spiked to carpeted floor.
Floor is suspended with basement underneath.  In the past I have use blu tack to secure speaker to stand.  Do you recommend
alternative such as spikes, auralex mo-pad, isonode, herbies or myrtlewood?

Any helpful input is greatly appreciated!

I put two Shun-Mook discs to the back and one small DH cones on top of the BDR plate between my Omega Hemptones speakers and the Skylan stands (fill-up with sands too).

I used some Herbie's in the past, but on a lark just decided to try the spikes that were included with the stands...WAY better this way (the spikes). Everything became much more focused and the bass tightened up. Put the Herbie's under some components and now everybody is happy.

I use AudioPoints exclusively under everything, components, speakers, subwoofer, etc. I use Sistrum Platforms under my floorstanders but under my stand mounted center channel Usher X-616 I use Audiopoints smallest cone.

That's what I use to think too... until I started trying other things. As stated above, spikes are great. I also liked Herbies Big black dots.

I've been using Herbies grungebuster dots between my monitors and stands. I like them better then blutak because they fall right off when I want to adjust my monitors, yet they keep the monitors secure on the stands for day to day listening. I didn't buy them for this purpose but they worked out so well that they've stayed in place. Not sure if there is a sound improvement or not, I've never taken the time to A/B them.

If you have a solid, well damped stand, all you need to do is rigidly couple the speaker to it. IME you don't need exotic/expensive devices to achieve this. I screwed three decent size, round head screws into the bottom of my speaker cabs in a triangular formation ... no "loose" devices will be more rigid than this, plus they can't be lost or knocked out of place. To provide a larger top plate on my steel, sand filled stands I screwed a wooden plate on it. Onto the wooden plate I screwed a flat L-bracket onto the top face at each rear corner (aligned with the rear edges of the wooden top plate) and another one at the front of the top plate with the 'V' pointing toward the front of the top plate. The screws driven into the bottom of the speaker sit directly on the wooden top plate and fit snugly inside the 'V' of each bracket. In other words, the brackets act as guides when placing the speaker on the stand and prevent the speaker from being knocked out of its alignment once placed on the stand. Using 3 rather than 4 screws/brackets ensures no rocking. The round screw heads are slightly taller than the thickness of the L-brackets so all that sits between the speakers and the top plate of the stands are the 3 screw heads.

Not sure I've explained this very well. If anyone is interested but confused, sing out and I'll do a couple of diagrams.

Two schools of thought. One is Blu-tac and that is 99% of the time my choice. Another is 'floating' of some type, such as cones/spikes/pucks/etc. For speakers, i generally prefer the keep it extremely solid and rigid method to the stand and then the stand oitself uses cones/tips as the speakers ARE a vibration device, unlike components where you want to avoid vibration.

I use the same small points between the stand and speaker.  Well worth the investment IMHO.

And yes, I *do* consider it an investment.

question that i have thought about over the years re cones or spikes on stands. Isnt there a tipping issue? I mean if you casually knock a speaker-- or the kids, or the vacuum cleaner--wont they fall?

I suppose there is.  How much more (if any) than Blu-Tack and the like is anyone's guess.

FWIW, my stand-mounted speakers have been in my living room for 5 years now, and the left speaker is literally beside the front door.  Though it has obviously received the occasional bump, to my knowledge it has never been seriously near to falling off the stand or tipping over.  Not bad considering the household (myself, my wife, one incredibly clumsy 10-year old boy, 3 cats and a hairy rat that doubles as a dog).

All of which is to say I find my speakers quite stable on stands with spikes.  My wife was terrified for the first year; the speakers are heavy, and could cause serious injury if a child were to knock one down.  But though the weight creates a potential danger, I believe it also serves as a stabilizing force.  Regardless, the end result is my wife doesn't worry about them any more.

Yes speaker are a vibration device and it's also a well known fact that the mor rigid the cabinet, the cleaner the sound. Heck cabinets are even made out of marble composite for this 1 reason,,,, to fight this internal vibration. Just because a speaker is a vibration device doesn't make cabinet vibration a good thing. I've tried both schools and I find a cleaner more dynamic sound crom cones, Audiopoints to be exact and Sistrum Platforms (that have Audiopoint cones in both directions) to be even more exact. To my ear, these Sistrum Platforms can not be beat in bringing out both the clarity and the dynamics of a loudspeaker. For my center channel speaker tho, I went with those little Audiopoint cones. When using the cone protectors, a simple shot of superglue would hold them to a metal base but I would use nothing on the cone itself. Yes you will have movement if you go knocking a monitor around and the same dangers apply when using Sistrum Platforms. But if you are looking for best case performance scenario here, IMHO you have it here.
