Volume At Start Up

Okay, stick with me here, because I don't know if I can even ask this question correctly.  Here it goes:

Lets say my amp has 100 increments on the volume control.  Lets say I listen at the 50th increment.  Before shutting down I turn the volume control down to 25 normally.  However, once I turned it down to 10 when shutting down.  When I came back the next day I only had to turn the volume control to 40 to get the same volume as the 50th increment. Why?

Was it the same CD or record?  Maybe the recording was louder.  Other than perception difference, there shouldn't be a difference.  Try it again using an SPL meter.
