Cables and Heating Vents

I can really only place my cables along a line that runs directly in front of the room's heating vents.  Is this a problem?  Would cable risers that brought them above the vents along the wall solve any problems I might have? Thanks

Uhhh. . Don't do this Dan. .  Heat rises.  So your vents are on the wall, and not in the floor, right?  If so, your cables will probably be okay there, but I wouldn't put mine there.  Maybe you can just get some CAT5 and have "winter cables" and "summer cables".  ;-)

Seriously, I'd find an alternative.  Perhaps mounting them well above on brass hooks, or suspending with string would be better.  I think risers are still going to have them too close to the airflow. .

Is the vent register in the wall or the floor?

If it's on the floor, is there no space between the vent and the wall?  If the cable is lying on the floor, I don't see why it would be getting much heat since the heat is rising into the room.

Try putting a thermometer around the area and see where the heat really is.

If the register is on the wall, there shouldn't be an issue at all.

Unless you have one of those big boiler-type heating vents with a metal grate that's too hot to walk on, you really should be able to move around the register and avoid excessive heat.

What's the downside of cables getting warm as long as they aren't going to melt?
