Cornet2 cap rolling in EQ position: a question
« on: 26 May 2008, 05:48 pm »
I finally got around to swapping out the stock EQ caps in my Cornet2 as per Jim's suggestion. I tried a Sonicap Gen I at 47nf and a Relcap RTE at 1nf, and it sounded horrible! Too much mushy bass and a heavily veiled top end. Thinking it might need some burn in time, I ran my Frybaby through it for a couple of days with minimal if any improvement. I then switched from the Relcaps to Sonicaps at 1nf, and voila!, it sounds better than ever. Is the RTE just not a good choice for this spot, or might there be an issue with mixing two different types of caps in the EQ spots?

some caps take over a 100 hours to break in. I keep having to remind myself of this because at one time two weeks ago I wanted to throw the cornet II out, Now I can't quit listening. jmho

How is the sound after a couple of days of settling in?

You have me worried, b/c your other caps are top notch.
What does the rest of your system look like?

I think it sounds great! Although the Mundorfs are pricey, the Sonicaps are pretty reasonable, and the FT3s are downright cheap. I have a Technics 1200 TT, which will soon have a ZYX RS-50 mounted on it, a DIY Cinemag SUT, Bottlehead Foreplay III pre, SAE 2200 amp, and Ohm Micro Walsh speakers.
