Summer time music?
« on: 26 May 2008, 04:59 am »
Since Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start of summer for many, I thought I'd play music all weekend that gets me in the mood for summer, for whatever reason.  8)  Here is what I've played so far, all on vinyl...I remember listening to these tunes and knowing school was out for at least 3 months. :D How about you all, what tunes get you in the summer time mood?

The Beach Boys, Endless Summer

Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run

Eagles, Eagles

Steely Dan, Can't Buy A Thrill

Here are some singles that haven't been mentioned yet that really play well in summertime:

“Margaritaville,” Jimmy Buffett (1977)

“Brown Eyed Girl,” Van Morrison (1967)

“Hot Fun in the Summertime,” Sly and the Family Stone (1969)

“Girl From Ipanema,” Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto (1964)

“Three Little Birds,” Bob Marley and the Wailers (1977)

“California Sun,” The Dictators (1975)

Jeez, are you guys all stuck in some kind of time warp?

I'll nominate Chuck Prophet's "Summertime Thing" as easily the equal of all those old warhorses listed above....  :D

Speaking of Chuck Prophet, here's a couple of clips. The first is a long live version of "Summertime Thing", although it's a pretty lousy hand held video and you can't hear the lyrics very well. It'll give you a taste though. The second one is "Doubter Out of Jesus" from his new record. It's good quality from the Letterman show, and features Paul Shaffer on the tubular bells. His records are great - check them out if you haven't yet. ROCK AND ROLL LIVES!!!  :D

Possibly the greatest summer album of all time:

Led Zeppelin- III

I listened to this one every day when it came out in the summer of '96 so I'll always associate it with summertime grooves:

Beck- Odelay

"The hot, hot music!"

The Roots- Things Fall Apart

And of course some reggae:

Augustus Pablo- East of the River Nile
