Straley Reality Cable Sleeve Effect
« on: 20 May 2008, 06:46 pm »

I read that the sleeve covering affects the sound but there wasn't much written about it. Has anyone listened to systems with both covered and bare Reality Speaker Cables? If you have experience with both, how would you describe the difference? Is it a huge change or very slight?

Covers available are white cotton and black material (?)

The Reality cables appear red or magenta in the pics on their site. Currently I have red Anti-Cables so not completely foreign to me. but the Reality's are bigger and pinker which a not very appealing.

Getting ready to acquire a pair of SCs to audition with the RWA amp and Devore super 8s.

In the opposite direction...can one simply strip off the covering without any sonic issues?

thanks tvad. Seems like the black sleeve must be something synthetic with more impact to dielectric absorption < I don't believe I just wrote that!

FYI (not you tvad) the sleeve is an option at extra $50 (about 15% of cable cost when added) which is not usually refundable if the cables are returned during trial period.

I am pretty sure the black sleeve is just Tech-Flex.  Its to make it purdy not sound better.

Prior to ordering my Reality speaker cables I gave my wife the the color options.
She chose black.

When I placed the order, Gregg suggested that if I must have them covered to go with the white.
He said the Black cable doesn't sound as good as the white.
He then said for the best performance go with the bare red cable.

I took his advice and bought the bare red cable.
I'm fine with the red and Michelle really didn't complain once I explained what Gregg had said.
Maybe the fact that my old cable was the size of a garden hose helped the WAF.

Bottom line, just ask Gregg about the covering.
He'll shoot you straight.

I have both versions - nekked and black sleeved, and have compared both on my Merlin VSM-MX's.  In most systems, the Merlins are very resolving of differences, but I have not been able to discern anything between the Reality SC's in mine.  Both sets have hundreds of hours on them.  I even biwired with both types, switching top and bottom, without any impact I could tell.  Great cables either way - open and very neutral.

About 3 years ago when I was doing a lot of A/B/A comparisons of my cables I was trying different sleevings to use to put over the cables. In every instance I could hear a compression of the soundstage. With the sleeving removed the soundstage opened up. The black sleeving that I use but do not recommend sonically is techflex. A few months later I noticed a number of people on the net speaking highly of cotton sleeving. So I tried it. It does impart a minuscule sonic signature but nothing compared to the nylon techflex. I just wish that I could find the cotton sleeving in another color. If any one knows where I can purchase black or a dark blue cotton sleeving I would give you a 3 foot interconnect for your troubles ( providing that I do not have to purchase thousands of feet of sleeving).
I made a decision to offer the sleeving as an option so that I could keep the costs down and to provide the best possible sound that they are capable of delivering. I have heard a number of prototype electronic products that sound real good before they come to the market. I have also heard a number of them when they finally went into production and was amazed how much of a difference there was from the prototype. Usually what ends up happening is a manufacture has to make his product "bullet proof" so that it will not blow up in the field if someone inadvertently hooks up something wrong. I did not want to sell a product that I knew that I could make better but wanted to cover it up so that it would look like everyone else's. Not to mention the added cost of materials and time to install the sleeving which imparts it's own sonic signature (at least with my cables).

Thanks,

Gregg

I love a thread when the gurus themselves appear! That's AC power!

Thanks Gregg!!

I guess now is the perfect time toask how the red covering came about. Is that the standard raw wire covering or to your spec? I don't expect you to spill the secret sauce recipe.

.....on my way to source some cotton sleeving what diameter do you need?

regards, ed

and thanks Tom and Jeff too.
