Selector Switch and volume control
« on: 18 May 2008, 07:50 am »
Hi all,

I had asked this question before, and I looked in here because I knew the answer was here. Couldn't find the posts.

Someday soon, I am about to get the TranscendentSound GGP. Before I put it together, I want to get a better quality Selector switch in there. No, not doing that for better sound, but to have a better quality switch in there so I won't have to replace the cheapy one later.

Also, other than going to the Goldpoint stepped control, I thought I would also get a better volume control.  So any idea of where and how much would help. Then I can sell my TVC.

Hello Ray,
For selectors there are a few options, The Gold Point, ELMA or Grayhill are very reliable units. The Grayhill will be the least expensive (around $20 from Digikey).

Volume controls are all over the board. For inexpensive units, the Noble has always been good to me. Moving up the ladder, the TDK and then DACT (stepped attenuator) come to mind.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the info. probably should just get an Elma and be done with it, but not to sure other than Goldpoint where to buy.

As far as the volume pot goes, maybe, it's just me, but the Alps is supposed to be better than the Noble? I don't really know for sure on that one. my main reason for getting a better pot is not necessarily better sound, rather because it will track better at the lower end of the range, better than the stock 50K supplied unit. So if you could steer me in the right direction that'll be fine. Appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks.

I just ordered a remote volume kit from Dantimax.  Two advantages I see.  First, the obvious remote control.  Second, the actual signal board is located close to the circuit and the controls are up front.   Another option to consider, HTH.

Hi Josh,

Would consider that, but it's going to be enough to build the GGP let alone a remote volume control. So if you have other suggestions, I am welcome to them.

Others may have a different opinion but I have always had better luck with the Noble than Alps Blue in regard to low level tracking balance with not much sonic differences between the two.
Either would be fine I'm sure and both much better than standard carbon based pots which is really unfortunate as I really love the sound of these. I will buy 10 carbon pots just to find 3-4 usable ones. They usually have poor low level balance but this can be compensated for

Hi Bill,

Well, whatever will work here. If the Noble is in your opinion better than the Alps then and if the low level tracking is better than the standard pot, then I'm game. Pm me, and maybe you could give me some idea where to buy one? Thanks again.

Both Percy Audio and PartsConnexion list the Noble pots, but both say they are discontinued and that supplies are limited.

I prefer stepped attenuators, but I haven't tried that many different attenuators.  In the scheme of things I think its worth the extra money for a decent stepped.

Ray,

Take a look at this...

His photos are not showing as he didn't upload them correctly, so I can't tell if his case is worthwhile, but given the high quality of parts used, you could buy it to part it out for your preamp.

Hi Josh,

Didn't see a Selector switch there. looks like some good parts to be had there. Thanks.

Ray,

You would probably find that a 50k PEC military grade dual log taper pot will have excellent sonics, great tracking, and will last a few lifetimes.  You can get them from digikey -- not as expensive as a goldpoint or DACT, but more than and alps or noble at approx $35 each.
