What Have I Done?
« on: 16 May 2008, 02:16 am »
Ouch.  I think I just killed one of my speakers.  Okay, here is what happened.  I have a Cayin A-88T integrated.  I wanted to use the preamp section of the Cayin and connect it to some mono blocks amps.  So I inserted my interconnects to the tape out of the Cayin and inserted the other side into the mono blocs.  When I turned it on, it was really loud, even though I had the volume control on zero.  I shut it off quickly, but at that time I did not notice one of the speakers was pretty much dead.  I didn't realize that until I put my regular preamp back in and hooked everything up like it was before I tried my experiment with the Cayin.   There was just some faint noise coming out the speaker and the mid driver and tweeter seemed to be dead all together.   I switched the speakers around to make sure it wasn't something else.  Sure enough, the one speaker works fine, but the other one is pretty much dead.  What did I do?  Any help or input would be appreciated.  Thanks

TomS

Tape out is going to be a fixed output at line level, no volume control at all.  Maybe fried some resistors in the crossover, though it takes a little time to heat them up enough.

Hey!

    Sorry to hear that :?

But "TAPE OUTPUT" is not the same as "PRE-OUT"!

What you did was driving the amp at pretty much full out put of you source. And that what killed your speaker driver(s).

I don't know if the Cayin A-88T have pre-out if it dose it should say "Pre-out"

Be very careful next time. :D

Take care,

Thanks for the replies.  The speakers are bi-wire, but I was not using bi-wire speaker cables.  So what did was connect the speaker cable to a an upper terminal that I was not using before and everything is working fine now.  When I plug it back into the lower terminal, no sound from the mid and tweet.

The bottom set of posts on the speakers only power the woofer drivers. And the top ones only the midrange and tweeter drivers. You need to keep the connecting straps in place when your not using them in biwire or biamp configuration. but make sure to take them out when your Biamping!!! or else your gonna have alot more than speakers to worry about  :thumb:

Thankyou.  so if I understand you right, use the bottom or black color post and then use the upper  or red color post on top?  Then leave the lower red and upper black emty, but they need to be capped.  Let me know if that is correct, and again thanks for your help.

No use either the bottom or top set of posts (both red and black) There should be a peice of metal strap that connects the top and bottom sets together. Or if not you can run some short peices of speaker wire.

should look something like that. Notice the gold straps that connect the two.

However if you biwire or biamp the speakers you take out the metal strap because you now have seperate wires going to each set of posts. I am not sure if you are trying to biamp or biwire you speakers but it is extermely important to make sure that if you BIAMP them that you remove those connecting straps. If not you can and most likely will destroy one or both amplifiers.

Yes, the metal straps are there.  I am using Red Wine Audio 70.2 monoblocks.  One amp per speaker, so I guess that is not biamping.  Isn't biamping when you are using one amp for the woofers and one for the upper range or two amps per speaker.  I am using the top for the red and bottom for the black.  The only reason I am doing this is because one of the speakers is dead if I use the bottom terminal for red.  It seems to sound just fine.  Is there anything wrong with not using the same row for the red and black?

Yes Bi-amping is when you have two amplifiers. One running the bass section of a speaker and one running the midrange and tweeter sections. There are other ways its done but that is probably the most common method.

There is nothing wrong with putting your speaker wires they way you have them with one wire connected to the top and one on the bottom.Thats not how you would normally do it but since you have the connecting straps in place it would be esentially the same connection point. But I think theres something missing here because if you have the straps in place it wont matter where you connect the wires up top or bottom as they are all connected together. Most binding posts have a plastic washer type thing with them. Are you sure your putting your speaker wires under the washer? If your using spades I suppose somehow it wouldnt be making contact that way which may be your problem.
